This week's readings
Sunday's Gospel relates the story of King Herod and John the Baptist. It is as sad a story as one will find in the Bible. It reveals human nature at its worst. John the Baptist is indiscreet in his criticism of the king because the king married his brother's widow after the brother died. John the Baptist cannot leave it alone and he infuriates the king's wife, Herodias.

King Herod admires and respects John, however, so he doesn't deal with him the way Herodias would like him to. But when Herodias' daughter dances before the king and delights him, Herod promises to grant her any wish. On her mother's advice she asks for the head of John the Baptist.

This is not the first time, neither will it be the last, in which otherwise virtuous characters in the Bible choose a path that harms the faithful. In this case, Herod considers his promise to grant a wish more important than obeying the Sixth Commandment, Thou Shalt Not Kill.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS

1982                       671          Amazing grace! how sweet the sound

1982                       544          Jesus shall reign where're the sun

1982                       562          Onward, Christian soldiers

HYMN INFORMATION: The melody to Morning has broken is a Gaelic folk tune first noted down and published in the 1880s, titled Bunessan after the Scottish village near where it was heard. Originally paired with a hymn text by Scottish poet Mary M. Macdonald, the melody came to the attention of the editors of the British hymnal Songs of Praise in the 1920s. Poet Eleanor Farjeon was then commissioned to write a new text which was published in the hymnal in 1931 coupled with the tune, and was later raised to international popularity as Cat Stevens' pop hit of the 1970s.
