HYMN INFORMATION: The melody to
Morning has broken is a Gaelic folk tune first noted down and published in the 1880s, titled Bunessan after the Scottish village near where it was heard. Originally paired with a hymn text by Scottish poet Mary M. Macdonald, the melody came to the attention of the editors of the British hymnal Songs of Praise in the 1920s. Poet Eleanor Farjeon was then commissioned to write a new text which was published in the hymnal in 1931 coupled with the tune, and was later raised to international popularity as Cat Stevens' pop hit of the 1970s.
