Golfers tee'd off about crime in our community are coming together for the second annual CrimeStoppers Golf Tournament at TPC Southwind August 6, 2018.

The tournament - thanks to a dozen sponsors and up to 100 players - brings in needed cash to the organization's account from which awards are paid to citizens who provide information leading to the IDs and arrest of individuals who commit felonies in Memphis and Shelby County.

Room remains for teams to sign up to play, said tournament chairman Gary Paulson.

He urged anyone interested to visit the CrimeStoppers site to learn more about the tournament and to reserve a spot for a four-person team while there still is time.

Promoted under the banner, "Play where the pros play and help stop crime," the first year's tournament was a striking success. This year's tournament is expected to continue and build on that success. Players get to play one of the country's finest courses and have the satisfaction of doing something to make the community safer.

"We really appreciate all our sponsors of this year's tournament, especially our title sponsor Phelps Security, which has long been a supporter of the Memphis Police Department as well as CrimeStoppers," said E. Winslow (Buddy) Chapman, executive director of the nonprofit.

"We expect a great day of golfing, and a great boost to our efforts throughout the year," he added.

Players will be fed breakfast and lunch, receive a gift bag, have an opportunity to bid on a four-day mountain retreat, and other prizes.

Players register this year beginning at 8 a.m., with starting time set at 9:30 a.m. Tournament t-shirts and mulligans will be available for sale.

CrimeStoppers appreciates all of this year's sponsors and sends out a special salute to title sponsor Phelps Security.

' Dreamgirls' brings down a full house
for CrimeStoppers 2018 funding event

The Bobbye Weinberger CrimeStoppers Night At The Theatre event held in June was a success in every way - 350 people, including 131 Memphis Police officers and guests - enjoying food and drinks and the highly-rated musicial Dreamgirls at Playhouse On The Square.

Special guest Mayor Jim Strickland spoke to the sell-out audience about CrimeStoppers and how it works with law enforcement and the community to keep Memphis safer.

This was the seventh year for the fundraiser. Next year, CrimeStoppers will again sponsor a show at Playhouse and will sell out every seat in the house to donors and patrons to raise needed cash in order to pay awards to citizens who call in tips that help arrest felons.

The show next year will be a revival of Cabaret, the classic show about a nightclub in pre-World War II Berlin, and the fate of the club's performers. Cabaret first opened on Broadway in 1966.

Buddy Chapman of CrimeStoppers presents an original piece of art to the late Bobbye Weinberger's brother, Dr. Harry Bronstein, in appreciation of the family's support.

By the numbers

Thirty felony crime cases that were solved thanks to tips to CrimeStoppers were presented to the organization's Awards Committee for the month of June, 2018.

The cases resulted in the clearance of 20 cases for the month - including three first degree murder charges - and the recovering of $6,920 in stolen property. Citizens were awarded $11,550 in cash payments in appreciation of the successful tips. The majority of the cases included tips that led to the arrest of felony fugitives, including several for homicides and attempted homicides. One tip helped police solve a 2015 rape.
