In a Universe of Exploding Stars
Amy Glazier, Preaching Practicum

No matter who we are, we all share the same night sky. As it turns out, this is only the beginning of our shared connection to the Cosmos-and to each other. Fusing insights from her training in Astrophysics with the excitement and accessibility of popular science, Amy will explore what it means that we live in a Universe of exploding stars.
Amy grew up stargazing in rural North Texas, where she went to Collin County Community College and Austin College. She moved to Chapel Hill in 2017 upon beginning her PhD program in Physics & Astronomy at UNC Chapel Hill, where she studies planets in other solar systems beyond our own. She still stargazes from her apartment balcony on clear nights.

MUSIC NOTES  Come early for a Hymn Sing featuring songs about oneness and connectivity. Special Music for the Service will feature Jenny Warnasch singing probably Peter Mayer's most famous song, Holy Now, and Eric Bannan putting aside his songwriter's hat to sing a beautiful tune penned by UU songwriter Jim Scott, The Oneness of Everything. Speaker Amy Glazier has also chosen some less well-known (but wonderful) hymns for us to sing, with the exception of the closer, which I'll bet everyone knows.
PARKING: Parking is available at The Community Church, as well as alternate parking options. Click here for a map.
Please note: parking is not allowed at the Kehillah across the street.

  • BALANCE & ACCURACY IN JOURNALISM WEDNESDAY JULY 10, 7:30 PM SANCTUARY Watch the Friedrich Moser - Oliver Stone documentary, A Good American. In the 90s, NSA's Bill Binney developed the data scan system ThinThread which preserved our citizens' privacy while searching for terrorism plots. Binney's system didn't cost enough to enrich privatized sectors of the NSA and was blocked. A far more expensive system disabled constitutional privacy protection and failed to detect the 9/11 plot, while a post 9/11 test of Thin Thread found the hijackers' activities and more. For more information, call Jerry Markatos (919) 542-2139 submitted by The Charles M. Jones Peace and Justice Committee
  • LIGHTS FOR LIBERTY VIGIL, Friday July 12, 7-9 pm  Side With Love invites you to join us at this nationwide Vigil and Action to End Human Detention Camps. A local vigil is being held at the main plaza in downtown Durham, 201 Corcoran Street. Rideshare information here. And please stop at the Side With Love table for your Love Tshirt, or more information.
  • ORANGE COUNTY CARE FOR CREATION MEETING The Orange County Care for Creation group at Binkley Baptist Church of Chapel Hill will hold a meeting on July 15 at 7:00 pm, with a presentation about their comprehensive waste diversion program and with break-out interest groups on topics such as Building Energy Efficiency, Food Justice, and Advocacy. • Art in the Sanctuary Dennis Szerszen's photography exhibit, Unstill Waters, will be shown from July 7 through August 27. Predominantly abstract images of water, his photographs are intended as contemplative studies. Dennis states that he is "pulled to water: its power, resilience, movement, and interaction with its surroundings...I am never alone when I am near it." Dennis Szerszen retired from a career as a software company executive to engage in his passion-- photography-- and to see how he could leverage that interest in the community. Dennis volunteers as a photography mentor with the Karen Youth Art Group, which is sponsored by the Frank Gallery. He also teaches various photography- related topics through Duke University's OLLI program. Dennis is a staff photographer for local community magazines. He exhibits as a proud member of the Triangle Visual Artists guild. A reception will be held on July 14 from 12:30-2:00 pm.
