Congratulations to MMCRU - NW Iowa's Latest STEM BEST Awardee!
Congratulations to Matt Hansen and MMCRU School District (Marcus, Meriden, Cleghorn, Remsen, Union) School on receiving a STEM BEST Award of $25,000! MMCRU's Industrial Tech Program, in partnership with local business, will be purchasing commercial grade manufacturing equipment such as CNC machining, advanced millwork processing technologies and welding robotic cells to provide industry grade materials and projects to 9-12 grade students.
Partners Include: SmithCo Manufacturing, Inc, KREG Tool, RJ Thomas Manufacturing, Vermeer Corporation, Wetherell Manufacturing, Inc.
We look forward to seeing this program grow and meet the needs of NW Iowa's workforce!

Advanced Manufacturing STEM Festival - ILCC
On October 4, 2019, Iowa Lakes Community College hosted an Advanced Manufacturing STEM Festival at the SERT Building. Local manufactures Students form
North Union, Emmetsburg, and Okoboji middle schools attended sessions that include: Iowa Lakes engineering tech, local business mini-sessions, and a tour of GKN (across the street from SERT Building). Local businesses included Rosenboom, Polaris, Jon Bond Performance, Precision Food Innovations, and AGCO. Seventh graders enjoyed the hands-on experience and exposure to Advanced Manufacturing jobs in the ILCC area.

Pint Size Science at Lawton-Bronson
Micaela Borer, Preschool teacher, at Lawton-Bronson shared some pictures of their recent delivery of Pint Size Science STEM Scale-Up award materials. Preschool received Push and Pull and Tiny Tinkerers. Mrs. Broer wrote the following: "My kids have already begun to explore with the push and pull ramps on their own and are LOVING it!" Thank you for sharing with the NW region! I encourage other schools to also share their stories of STEM with us!

Upcoming Festivals
Lawton-Bronson Preschool STEM Festival - November 7 5:30-7:30
Preschool students and their families will go from station to station in the gym exploring the many STEM Scale-up program awards Lawton-Bronson has received the past few years to boost STEM awareness with parents.
Pocahontas County STEM Festival - November 8 - 9:00-2:30 at Laurens-Marathon Elementary - Grades TK-6 from Pocahontas and Pocahontas Catholic - 481 students - 30 minute sessions - two color tracts one for younger kids - one for older. Looking for about 25 presenters local and statewide. The theme is STEM Careers.
Le Mars Preschool STEM Festival - November 14, 5-6:30pm - 76 students- Little Rascals preschool also. Located in the gym. The goal is to engage children during playtime. Sessions include: Ramps and Pathways, Light and Shadow, Pint Size Science Bee Bots, PSS Mini Meteorologist, and STEM in Action Ron's Ramp Adventure.
Siouxland Christian Christmas Light STEM Festival - December 3, 6-8 pm - K-12- 230 students. Their goal is the festival is to begin to develop a STEM culture in their school. Session will be in the gym with various businesses and organizations participating around the theme of Christmas Lights.
Cherokee (Kee to STEM) Festival - December 10- 6:00-8:00 pm - Cherokee Middle school students - 5-8 - Partnering with Public library and Sanford Museum. Sessions in classrooms- students will register for a color track and attend 4 sessions. We are looking for presenters - state and local. The theme is STEM Careers.

Computer Science is Elementary Schools Visit Loess Hills Elementary
The 12 schools that were awarded the Computer Science is Elementary sent key members of their team to visit Loess Hills Elementary in Sioux City in October. Teachers observed coding lessons and computer science integration lessons. The purpose of these visits is to let teachers see how computer science can be integrated into various curricular areas such as Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Coding skills are taught to students once a week and then those skills are then practiced as students integrate coding into their course work that week. Loess Hills teachers and principal, John Beeck, were great hosts and offered advice and guidance to the visiting schools.

NW STEM Advisory Board Tours Sioux City West High School's STEM BEST Program
The NW STEM Advisory Board held their October meeting at Sioux City West High School. in 2018, Sioux City Community School District expanded the GeoPhysics (Geometry + Physics) STEM curriculum implemented during the 2017-2018 school year to establish authentic partnerships with three new business partners. Community partnerships integrated real-world questions for students to practice problem-solving utilizing 21st century skills of collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking. The NW STEM Board was able to see these efforts continue as students were preparing to begin a project in which they will create adaptive solutions for individuals with disabilities. The board witnessed some really great instruction, engaging classroom discussions, and a visit from a physical therapist all to generate ideas for students and their projects. Amazing work happening here!
