April 2, 2019
Dear Resident:

Hopefully we have seen the last snowfall this year and we can finally look forward to spring. I would like to welcome a new staff member to the Ward 9 family. Abby Osborne is my new Executive Assistant and will be working along with Michelle to serve our residents.

This month's newsletter has information about the Ward 9 Volunteer Awards. The deadline is approaching soon so please get your nominations in.

Also please read about the Town Hall on April 8 where you can ask questions and comment on the issue of governance in Mississauga and the Region of Peel. This is a critical issue for our city. Decisions made by the province can have an impact on the future of our city and also potential for detrimental impacts on your taxes. If you cant come to City Hall, watch and participate on Facebook on the City of Mississauga channel.

Please enjoy the information here and let me know if you have any questions about any of the articles.

As always you can contact me for assistance on any city or region issue at pat.saito@mississauga,ca, by phone to 905-896-5900 at any time and my staff and I will be pleased to help you.

Nominate a W9 Volunteer

Do you know a Ward 9 resident who has volunteered more than 5 years in the city of Mississauga (3 years for under 16)? Let them know their time and commitment is appreciated by nominating them for the 2019 Ward 9 Volunteer Award .

Last year I had the honour of recognizing almost 100 Ward 9 volunteers at a special ceremony. This spring, I will be once again recognizing Ward 9 residents who have dedicated their time to making our community a better place. The recipients of the Ward 9 Volunteer Award will be recognized at a reception at the Erin Meadows Community Centre on May 8, 2019 and will receive a special pin and certificate to commemorate their years of service.

Nomination forms are on the Ward 9 website and are open until April 10, 2019.

You can also print and mail the completed form to: Pat Saito, Councillor Ward 9, City of Mississauga, 300 City Centre Drive – 3rd Floor, Mississauga, Ontario L5B 3C1 or fax to my attention to: 905-896-5863.
Residents invited to Town Hall on Regional Governance Review

At the March 27 Council meeting, Mississauga City Council adopted a motion approving in principle that Mississauga become independent from the Region of Peel, subsequent to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s Regional Government Review .

Council also adopted my motion to have public input and we approved hosting a resident Town Hall on Monday, April 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Council Chambers – second floor (300 City Centre Dr., Mississauga, ON). Residents can also watch live streaming on Facebook , Twitter and Mississauga.ca .

As part of the Government of Ontario’s review, the Ministry is conducting online public consultation until April 23, 2019. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on regional government reform through this channel.

Meadowvale Neighbourhood Character Study Session 3
Thank you to the residents who participated in the three sessions of our Meadowvale Character Area study.

The purpose of the study is to develop a policy framework that will guide future growth and compatible development in the Meadowvale area. The last session was a chance to show some of the recommendations. Staff will now put together some recommended policy changes so that we can build the future Meadowvale in accord with what we heard from the community.

World Down Syndrome Day

I was honoured to host the World Down Syndrome Day Flag raising at Mississauga Civic Centre on March 21st. Having spent my first career with many children and youth who had Down syndrome, I understand the importance of focusing on the many achievements and building opportunities for all.

Peel 321 Peel Down Syndrome Association is a community offering support and information, as well as a network of families that believe in their children. What a wonderful opportunity to be able to recognize this important day with such a great organization!

Thank you to the Pak Pioneers Community Organization for inviting me to your Multicultural Art Fest held in Meadowvale on March 24th.

Mississauga Startup Challenge Finale
On March 28th, I had the opportunity to be one of the judges at this Dragon Den style competition where I heard some amazing ideas from young innovators! It's always such fun to be involved in events that encourage our youth to be creative and to showcase their talent. Congratulations to the winning pitches - "Ask Sarah", "Feely Piano" and "Vision to Venture".
Remembering those who lost their lives in New Zealand
On March 30th I joined faith leaders and residents at a gathering at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Hosted with the Voice of Canadian Citizens to support our Muslim community in the aftermath of the New Zealand mosque tragedy, we shared our comments, lit candles for the 50 innocent people who lost their lives and mourned with our Muslim neighbours.

We cannot take peace for granted, but instead learn about each other and continue to build a community of understanding and support.
