Message from the Head of School

Yesterday, our students commemorated Yom HaZikaron, the memorial day for Israel's fallen, with an emotional ceremony. A particularly moving part of the ceremony was the story of the uncle of one of our students. After the tank he was commanding in the Yom Kippur war was hit by an Egyptian missile and the ammunition that they fought back with ran out, Shimon Vaknin took the final grenade and ran out towards the attackers, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers, losing his own life in the process. Shimon Vaknin received a posthumous medal of courage for sacrificing his own life to save the lives of his friends. It is difficult for most of us to imagine being in that type of circumstance. Many people's relationships with wars are limited to movies and video games. Having experienced war firsthand, I take the opportunity at these ceremonies to stress to our students that there is nothing "cool" about a war. I explain that war should be the very last choice for resolving conflict, but that for the sake of survival, unfortunately, sometimes there is no other choice. After all of the stories, songs and speeches, at the end of the ceremony, a couple, Israeli grandparents, reflected that it would be impossible for our students to truly "get" the full impact of Yom HaZikaron. We quickly agreed that that is actually a good thing, and that we hope that they never need to fully get that impact.

Today we celebrated Yom Ha'Atzmaut. After the flag raising and shacharit service, our students put on a showcase of their Israel learning. The projects were inspiring with students across the school visiting each others' classrooms, sharing and learning from one another. After lunch, students engaged in an Israel quiz bowl, and visited an interactive shuk presented by the Hebrew teachers and parent volunteers, featuring Israeli dancing, cooking, games and more. I was especially excited by the exhibit in which our eighth graders shared a multi-media trail of photos and reflections of their Israel journey. And while today's event was engaging, educational and fun, I'm not sure our students truly get Yom Ha'Atzmaut either. I doubt they can fully comprehend the significance of there being an independent Jewish state. It is my hope that these symbolic events, on the backdrop of continuous learning and our eighth grade journey will help lay a foundation for our students' growing and nuanced appreciation of the implications of Israel's existence, its challenges and potential, the hope and security it affords the Jewish people as well as the creativity and innovation it provides for the entire world. Shabbat Shalom -Zvi
