OVER 20 YEARS OF ALOHA FOR VISITORS

Visitor Lei-Making Ministry
Visitor Lei
Mahalo nui loa Edith Hashizume and Nora Takenouchi for your many years of service!

One of All Saints’ most enduring and beloved ministries is performed by a few dedicated and humble artisans who have been making lei for our visitors for many years.

Edith Hashizume has been making lei to give to our visitors at each service for over 21 years - ever since she retired from working at KCC Library. Nora Takenouchi started about the same time and has been going strong ever since. They are being helped by All Saints’ friend Marsha Mizutani.
When Edith was ushering and giving out the lei, visitors from two to three years before would say, ”Oh, I still have the lei you gave us last time. We saved them.”
The following is taken from interviews with Nora and Edith:

Epistle - Tell us about the design and color choices.

“The yarn is donated so we have many choices. We each do whatever we like.”

Epistle - About how many are given out each week?

“We never count before.”

Epistle - About how many does each artisan make per month?

“When we see that we need more we make more.”

Epistle - Do you train new artisans who may want to volunteer to make lei?

“YES! Come to Monday Crew 8:00AM in the church office or call Edith (822-3026) or Nora (822-3077) for instructions.”

EPISCOPAL CHURCH DAYS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Implementing The 2017 Strategic Design Plan
The Diocese of Hawai‘i has formed design teams to help implement its 2017 Strategic Design Plan. This plan aims to help:
  • improve communications within congregations, across the diocese and into our communities;
  • developing and sustaining spiritual growth within our churches;
  • help strengthen our identity as “One ‘Ohana” and foster the relationships within our ‘ohana among clergy, lay leaders and congregations.
We (Ron, Beth & Carolyn) are volunteering on the ‘Ohana Design Team. To bring our churches together, we are initiating an Episcopal Church Day, working with Habitat for Humanity to provide more affordable housing to the island of Kaua‘i. We hope to combine the resources of all five Episcopal churches, dedicating one day a month to aid in the construction of 17 new homes in ‘Ele‘ele.
The first workday is scheduled for Saturday, August 11 th and the second is Saturday September 8 th . Subsequent workdays will be announced at a later date. No special skills are necessary, as most of the work will be manual labor (painting, landscaping, minor construction, etc). Even help with providing lunches is needed. So please join your fellow Episcopal church members as one ‘ohana in support of this worthy cause.

Click on the video link below to learn more about Kaua`i Habitat for Humanity .
To join our effort, please register online at  http://kauaihabitat.org/volunteer-info-web-form. Indicate on the form that you are joining as part of a group, then enter “One ‘Ohana” as the group name. As the day draws closer, we will provide more information regarding your participation. Please contact us if you have more questions.

SIX REASONS WHY STEWARDSHIP GOES BEYOND TITHING
Hugh Whelchel
Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your whole life exclusively to His service, you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already.
– C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
This week we examine some of the principles of Biblical Stewardship and explore our roles as managers of Godʻs creation. I hope this essay will stimulate thought, reflection, and prayer. If you would like to discuss further, please feel free to contact me.

Part 1

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms ( 1 Pet. 4:10 ).

Living a life of purpose and significance begins with understanding the foundational principles of biblical  stewardship . Unfortunately, many Christians have been taught a narrow definition of stewardship that only involves tithing and managing personal finances. This limited view of stewardship has led many to believe that everything outside of those arenas belongs to them and can be used however they want—especially their work.

We need to recover a biblical view of stewardship—Stewardship with a capital “S,” if you will—that encompasses our whole lives, all of which belong to God. Here are six principles that help to flesh out this larger definition of stewardship:

1.  God Owns Everything

Paul writes in  Col. 1:16 :
For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
2. Everything We Have Is a Gift From God
Everything you have, eat, drink, breathe, wear, or use is because of God’s grace. We must echo Job’s declaration from  Job 1:21 :

Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.
3. God Has Given Us Authority Over His Earthly Creation

The biblical term for this idea is “ stewardship .” God the creator, owner of everything, gives human beings provisional rule and ownership in this earthly realm. We see this first in the opening chapters of the Bible in what is called the  Cultural Mandate  ( Gen. 1:28 ).

Hugh Whelchel is Executive Director of the Institute for Faith, Work & Economics and author of  How Then Should We Work? Rediscovering the Biblical Doctrine of Work . The full text of this article is available  HERE .
We invite your family to join All Saints' on Saturday, September 1 st - Monday, September 3 rd  (Labor Day Weekend) for the 3 rd Annual All Saints' `Ohana Retreat at Camp Sloggett, the YWCA camp in Koke`e State Park.

The retreat promises to be an enjoyable, family-centered, and spirit-filled weekend. Even more fun than last year with activities planned for all ages and activity levels.

Registration forms are available here. Please complete the form and attach it to the Ohana Retreat clipboard on the table by the church door on Sunday or to the church office by Sunday, August 12 th .

There is a suggested donation amount of $20 to help offset the cost of the Camp. Additional donations to underwrite the weekend are always welcome. The Church will provide some meals, snacks and drinks with the remainder being the responsibility of the 'Ohana. Check in at the camp is 10:00AM on Saturday September 1 st .  Participants are encouraged to gather at All Saints' at 9:00AM on Saturday to caravan up to Camp Sloggett. We strongly encourage carpooling.

Camp Sloggett offers a 15-person lodge, a 15-person bunk house, a 4-person cabin, and plenty of space for outdoor camping amid the grounds. Tentatively, we have set a 50-person enrollment cap, so sign up early to reserve a spot.

We need volunteers to share their gifts, talents, and skills to coordinate activities and oversee responsibilities (ie. hiking, crafts, games, music, prayer and spiritual reflection, cooking, cleaning, etc.).

We hope that you join us for this amazing opportunity for fun, fellowship, and spiritual renewal. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to assist with the planning process, please email  Mary Margaret Smith.

We will keep you updated with more details as the `Ohana Retreat approaches.

SAVE THE DATE: AUGUST 5 th
Youth Group Service Day & Blessing Of The Backpacks
On Sunday, August 5 th , the Ke Akua Youth Group will lead the 9:30AM service. Members of the Youth Group will be reading the scripture lessons, assisting with the liturgy, offering the sermon, and will serve at the Altar with Rev. Ryan.
In addition, on August 5th, as our youth and keiki prepare to return to school, the service will include the “blessing of the backpacks.” The purpose of the special liturgy is to honor our keiki and youth as they go back to school. Through prayers and a blessing, the congregation will remind the keiki that their Church ‘Ohana are praying for them during their educational journey. We invite all the keiki and youth to bring their backpacks/computer cases to be blessed.
A special offering of “School Supplies” will be collected and donated to Hale Ho‘omalu.
