The Choices We Make

Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action  by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good fit, that is to say  compatible with your interests and abilities.

CanDo's
NAPA  FOOD  PROJECT (NFP)
NEIGHBORHOOD COORDINATOR  ORIENTATION

As we mentioned last week, our NFP volunteers have now brought in over 102,000 pounds of non-perishable food for neighbors who rely on the Napa Food Bank.  And while every green bag is precious, it's when they come together that we truly make a difference.

The key?
Neighborhood Coordinators!

They're the volunteers who organize perhaps 8-15 folks in their neighborhood or through their place of work. Those Food Donors pledge to leave a bag outside their front door six times per year. The Neighborhood Coordinators send them a couple of reminders before the pick-up date and then make their rounds to deliver green bags to the Food Bank on a Saturday morning, every other month.

Once you've attended orientation, the job of a Neighborhood Coordinator takes only 60-90 minutes every two months.
And, oh, the good you'll do.

Daisies - a poem by Mary Oliver

It is possible, I suppose, that sometime
we will learn everything
there is to learn: what the world is,  for example,
and what it means.  I think this as I am crossing
from one field to another, in summer, and the
mockingbird is mocking me, as one who either
knows enough already or knows enough to be
perfectly content not knowing. Song being born
of quest he knows this:  he must turn silent
were he suddenly assaulted with answers. Instead
oh hear his wild, caustic, tender warbling ceaselessly
unanswered. At my feet the white-petaled daisies display
the small suns of their center-piece - their, if you don't
mind my saying so - their hearts. Of course
I could be wrong, perhaps their hearts are pale and
narrow and hidden in roots. What do I know.
But this:  it is heaven itself to take what is given,
to see what is plain; what the sun  lights up willingly;
for example - I think this
as I reach down, not to pick but merely to touch -
the suitability of the field for the daisies, and the
daisies for the field.

Thanks to Napa Valley Insight Meditation for reminding us of this poem on this perfect, late spring day.
