FEATURED STUDENT: Andrea Garcia-Ortiz, Hillsboro's Amazing Kid
Congratulations are in order for Glencoe senior Andrea ("Andi") Garcia-Ortiz for being named Hillsboro's Amazing Kid by the Pamplin Media Group. The paper sponsors the Amazing Kid program annually to showcase and honor youth who go above and beyond for the good of their community. Andi was nominated by her AP Calculus teacher, Barbara Scott, who states it is rare to find a high school student who puts the welfare of others as a priority, but that Andi exemplifies it in everything she does. Among her many activities, Andi has served as a camp counselor for a special needs basketball clinic, recruited and educated donors for a Bloodworks Northwest Blood Drive, and helped serve food to Portland-area homeless through Portland Night Strike. Teacher Appreciation Week
May 7-11, 2018, is Teacher Appreciation Week! The National Education Association and National Parent Teacher Association encourage us to treat teachers like "V.I.T.s - Very Important Teachers" all week long and especially on Tuesday, May 8 -  National Teacher Day - by sharing our appreciation on social media with #ThankATeacher. Of course, we should also thank them in person! Our teachers are amazing and special and we are thrilled to celebrate them this week!

National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week is May 6-12. We are extremely grateful to our District nurses for their tireless efforts to support our students with medical needs and for the training they provide to our school health room assistants and others. Thank you, nurses!

Bike to School Day is May 9
This Thursday, May 9, is  National Bike to School Day! Students who can do so safely are encouraged to ride their bike or walk to school on this day - hopefully along with classmates, parents, and community members - to engage in a healthy activity and build community. Be sure to wear your helmet and always watch for cars!

Summer Term Special Education Classes

This summer, George Fox University is offering several courses toward the SPED Endorsement that will be taught right here at the District Office. George Fox bills HSD directly, and the District will pay using your tuition reimbursement benefit. You can even borrow ahead from that benefit so there is no out-of-pocket expense!* (*A one-time registration fee of $40 is not reimbursable.) E-mail Kristina Gantt in HR if you have questions or would like to register for any or all of the available classes.

District Science-o-Rama 2018

There are few events where it's okay for bacteria, mold and gummy bears to go together. One of those is the District Science-o-Rama, where over 250 exhibitors in grades K-8 gathered at Century High School on May 3 to share the results of their scientific research and present what they have learned about science and the scientific process. As a visitor said, "These kids are amazing! If they keep doing this every year, they'll only get better and better."
