APRIL 2019 E-NEWSLETTER
A Message From Our President

Welcome to April! We have several special events this month as we celebrate Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and we hope to see you at some of them! For those of you in North County, stop by and say hi to me at the Pistachio Salon Autism Cut-A- Thon on Tuesday, April 2nd, at their beautiful salon in Carlsbad.

April also means it is time for the Splash for Cash!! Join us at our biggest pool party and fundraiser of the year on Sunday, April 14th, at the Aqua Pros Swim School at the Boys and Girls Club in San Diego, and help us raise money for our aquatics programs such as Surf Camp and swim lesson scholarships, and our family recreational programs like Pool Parties and Gym Nights. We will feature a large silent auction, breakfast and lunch prepared by our favorite San Diego firefighters, special guests, and much more! You won't want to miss it!

As we approach summer, I'm sure you are all trying to plan out your family schedule. If summer camps are something you are interested in for your child, we have two great programs available! Registration is already underway for Camp I CAN, our summer camp for autistic children ages 6-17, that we offer in conjunction with two local YMCAs, Toby Wells YMCA in central San Diego, and Magdalena Ecke YMCA in northern San Diego county. We still have some spots remaining but we do recommend registering soon in order to ensure you get the week you want!

Surf Camp registration also begins this month! For those who have fundraised $250 or more for Splash for Cash, you will be eligible for Priority Registration the day of the event. All other registrations will be accepted after April 15th. Surf Camp is open to all individuals on the autism spectrum ages 5 and up, including adults. Stay tuned for announcements about our other adult summer program, AWARE, when registration begins next month!

Finally, I am sad to announce the sudden passing of a long time supporter of our organization, Bob Lee, the husband of Tammy Anderson of Aqua Pros. Tammy and Bob have been so important in the development of all of our wonderful aquatic programs in San Diego and donated thousands of hours of volunteer time over the past 18 years. You are all invited to a celebration of Bob's life. He was bigger than life and a huge Nascar fan. On Sunday, April 7th, from 11 AM - 3 PM, come join us as we take a "last lap" for Bob at Fast Times, 3065 Clairemont Drive in San Diego, and help us celebrate the life of an amazing man.

Happy Autism Acceptance Month,

Amy  Munera

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: APRIL 2019

The Autism Society San Diego is proud to roll out a new initiative for 2019 highlighting some of our amazing volunteers and honoring the work they do for our organization

THIS MONTH...MEET LINDSEY!

Lindsey is approaching the end of her second year serving on the board of the Autism Society and has recently stepped into the role of Secretary!

What's your connection to the autism community?
My younger brother was diagnosed with ASD when he was two and since then I have developed a passion for working with kids with developmental disabilities. I've been working in the clinical field since interning in UCSD's autism research lab and have been an ABA technician for over 6 years. I'm currently a Board Certified Behavior Analyst supervising other technicians and a I oversee a varied caseload of kids and adults with behavior support needs.

How do you support the Autism Society San Diego?
I have served on the Board of Directors since June 2017 and currently chair the Enews and Autism-Friendly Library Outreach committees. You can also usually find me smiling behind many a resource table!

What is your favorite program the Autism Society San Diego is a part of?
I might be biased, but I absolutely love being a part of creating autism-friendly spaces in our community, especially our local libraries. It's so rewarding to provide safe, judgment-free spaces where families can access resources, ask questions, and get to watch their kids be kids!

The simplest way to get involved in supporting our community is...
Always be up on the latest research and find ways to explore how your favorite community spaces can be more accessible and accommodating to people with autism! We are always here to help if you have any big ideas :)

Interested in making a difference yourself? Join our wonderful Board of Directors to be a part of all we do in
San Diego County!
Contact us with inquiries or join us at our next Board Meeting on March 28th at 6:30pm.
