CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
Ambassador of Colombia, H.E. Francisco Santos Visits Howard University
We were honored to have Ambassador of Colombia to the U.S., His Excellency Francisco Santos join us for the second installment of our Colombia Ahora series on November 14th. The Ambassador offered remarks on the state of Black Colombia and outlined some of the initiatives he is supporting to highlight and support Black communities there. Special thank you to the staff at the Embassy of Colombia in Washington, D.C. for helping to arrange his visit to Howard. In addition to the embassy, we would like to thank Provost Anthony Wutoh and Assistant Provost for International Programs, Dr. Snell for their remarks as well.
November 12-17th was International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. It is an initiative to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences. This year the Bunche Center teamed up with the School of Business, the College of Nursing and Allied Health as well as globally minded professionals from the D.C. area to put on a series of panels aimed at getting students to think about their future through an international lens. Our Business and Career panels had a wide range of participants varying from the public and private sectors as well as academia. We are grateful for each of our panelists for their participation and the important career advice they had to offer our students. Special thanks to Dr. Rustagi and Dr. Banks for helping to coordinate the business and health panels respectively.

*The Health panel has been postponed due to the inclement weather. Please stay tuned for new dates in the Spring.*

CENTER SPOTLIGHT
From November 7-10 one of our longest study abroad partners, CIEE, held their annual conference in Barcelona, Spain and as a testament to our strong partnership, Howard University was well represented at all levels. CIEE invited President Wayne A.I. Frederick and Director of the Bunche Center, Tonija Hope Navas, to present to this year’s cohort of Minority Serving Institution (MSI) Presidents, to include the presidents of Morehouse College, Trinity University (DC), Benedict, Miami-Dade CC, Medgar Evers CC, Tougaloo, and Central State among others. The focus of the presentation was how study abroad is reflected across theinstitution and the ways in which HU has collaborated with CIEE. Dr. Frederick highlighted several programs including Alternative Spring Break, Medical School missions to Haiti, and the increase in prestigious fellowships, almost all of which involve an international component, that we have had during his presidency. Ms. Navas discussed the increase in student participation in study abroad in the last 3 years and HU’s support for strengthening study abroad at all HBCUs, especially through the #studyabroadsoblack movement. She also discussed the unique partnership with CIEE through faculty professional development activities, student scholarships totaling over $300k in the last 3 years, and the Berlin experience for our Bison STEM Scholars program.
Howard junior Political Science/African-American Studies double major, Ms. Carmen Crusoe, was also invited to present to the President’s workshop to discuss her experience as a member of the 2nd cohort of the Frederick Douglas Global Scholars Program (FDGS). The FDGS program takes traditionally underrepresented students from MSI’s abroad for 4 weeks in the summer. Ms. Crusoe spent a month in Cape Town, South Africa this past summer and shared her life-changing experience with the presidents. Later in the conference, she was also invited to address the larger conference as a member of a plenary panel made up of other FDGS participants. Ms. Crusoe was an exceptional Bison Ambassador.
Ralph J Bunche Center Program Assistant, Michelle Morris, was also in attendance and co-presented during the conference with a colleague from Gallaudet University, Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn - Coordinator for Education Abroad, on “ Leveraging Technology for Accessibility: Study Abroad for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students ”. Ms. Morris assembled an exceptional resource guide for study abroad practitioners looking to better support deaf and hard of hearing students looking to go abroad. If you are interested in learning more about how to support students with disabilities please contact her at michelle.morris@howard.edu.
Study Abroad Manager, MaRaina Montgomery was also recognized at the CIEE opening plenary for her role on the 2018 Session Selection Committee.

Finally, the entire HU delegation had the opportunity to break bread with the 11 HU students who are currently studying abroad in Barcelona. All 11 students are from the School of Business, and are thoroughly enjoying their semester abroad.

Thank you to CIEE for inviting us to share the work we are doing at Howard University to make sure that our students are prepared to be change agents for the 21st century. Remember #studyabroadsoblack!

A Review of For Humanity, Culture, Community & Maroonage: A documentary by Dr. KMT Shockley and Kofi LeNiles

By: Cassely Etienne
Imagine a community where crime was low, families were happy, and everyone was accepted. A place where all members work together to provide for each other. No need to worry about how others judge you or whether or not you will be able to live a resourceful life. I know, it sounds way too good to be true, but it does exist. Down in Colombia is a town called San Basilio de Palenque and its unified society was brought to our attention by film creators Dr. Kmt Shockley and Kofi LeNiles, of the HU School of Education. The film entitled,  For Humanity: Culture, Community, and Marronage , was the start to Howard’s Colombia Ahora/Colombia Now series which is highlighting the culture, history and current events in Colombia. The film shadows this Maroon community that embraces their African heritage. Starting with its history, San Basilio de Palenque was built by Africans who escaped their enslavement and were determined to keep their heritage in tact.

Known as the “Epicenter of Afro culture in Colombia”, Palenque has their distinct traditions separate from the Spanish culture. Palenqueros use a Bantu-based language with a mix of Spanish Creole language. With the men in the fields growing crops and dealing with the animals, the women use their talent of cooking to sell to consumers in the downtown area. Kids in the community have the opportunity to get an education, health is dealt with through a local clinic but primarily through the remedy of homemade medicines. What about crime and violence? Well they do not have a typical justice system with police and judges. Instead they give the authority of punishment to the elders, but even with this system, the Palenqueros have said they have only had up to four crimes within the past 300 years. It seems crazy to think but their community is built on equality. Marriages don’t fail because there is a level of understanding and children aren’t abandoned because everyone is considered family.

Now although internally Palenque is strong, residents do encounter hardships like the rest of the world. Many of the Palenqueros are discriminated against because of how dark their skin is and the language speak. To outsiders, Palenqueros are viewed as slackers but that is because they are uneducated about the reality of their community. It is hard to maintain identity because of the impact of American culture, especially on the younger generation. This is an issue that hits many communities across the globe, but Palenqueros try to avoid it by preserving their culture through music. Hip Hop and Reggae are very popular and the younger generation enjoys it, but when you incorporate the Palenque culture they produce Rap Folklore. It is a method of self recognition.

There is so much to be said about San Basilio de Palenque and how simple but complex their society is. I could go on and on about how special their culture is and how communities across the globe could take 1 or 2 notes from them, but you should watch for yourself. You can rent or buy this film on Vimeo and experience San Basilio de Palenque from a different perspective.
