The mid-year reports on construction activity in metropolitan Pittsburgh revealed a surprising drop in residential construction and a strong non-residential/commercial market. Housing starts were off more than 800 units during the first six months of 2018 compared to 2017, according to the Pittsburgh Homebuilding Report. Traditional detached single-family construction rose by 4.5% to 1,053 homes but townhouse construction fell 36.1% and apartment starts fell by 661 units. (Click for more information about subscribing to the report.) Non-residential/commercial starts were at $2.13 billion through the first half of 2018

Project News  

The Builders Exchange is reporting the $41 million Salk Hall renovation has gone out to bid to pre-qualified bidders. NRP is taking bids on 2 buildings totaling 442 apartments and a 544-car garage, the next phase of Riverfront Landing. UPMC selected Turner Construction as CM for its $240 million Hillman/Shadyside Hospital expansion. The Allegheny County Airport Authority selected Gensler/HDR joint venture, along with Louis Vidal + Architects, as the design team for the new $1.1 billion Terminal Modernization Program. The selection of a construction manager/agent is expected in September/October.

NRP is developing the Riverfront Landing apartments (the nearly completed Edge 1909 is shown above) and is taking bids on trade packages for the $55 million buildings in the next phase.

Joseph Anglim has joined the survey division of raSmith's Oakmont office as a project surveyor. In his role at raSmith, Anglim is responsible for extracting and processing LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data that has been collected in the field by members of raSmith's survey team with the use of 3D laser scanning (or LiDAR) survey technologies. Anglim is a 2017 graduate of Michigan Technological University, holding a bachelor's in surveying engineering.
