Illuminations... The 2017-18 Literary Magazine is here!

Under the direction of Mr. Ebersole, Middle School English teacher, Peabody has published a new Literary magazine titled, Illuminations. Selected works from students in Grades 5-8 are included in the magazine. Students in grades 5-8 will be bringing home the magazine from school today, June 1st. Please ask your student to show you the amazing work voluntarily submitted by these students!  You can also access the magazine digitally!
A Year of French Excellence!

In March, French students in Grades 7 and 8 classes participated in Le Grand Concours. Le Grand Concours is an annual and National French writing contest, featuring all 50 states and close to 80000 participants. Every year, our Peabody students perform outstandingly. Again this year, ALL were recognized and most of our students scored in the top 75 percentile and up, with bronze, silver and gold medals. 

A very special "Félicitations" to Kat Ravichandran and Knox Daniel who ranked 3rd and 2nd nationally with a gold medal, as well as Sam Funk and Claire Newman who received a PLATINUM medal and plaque, both ranking in first place nationally!

Bravo to all our French students for this wonderful accomplishment!
Alumni Spotlight

Peabody is pleased to feature Peabody alumni siblings Jessie (2008) and Josh (2012) Press-Williams in our Alumni Spotlight for May!

Jessie graduated from Peabody in 2008, attended Charlottesville High School, and graduated from MIT with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She moved to Lusaka, Zambia in 2016 a s an Associate at IDinsight, an NGO that helps leaders in international development make better, evidence-based decisions. “I've worked on projects in Zambia and Uganda in public health, water and sanitation, and agriculture,” Jessie says. “Later this year, I'll be moving to Nairobi, Kenya, as a Design Engineering Fellow for BURN, an NGO that designs and manufactures clean cookstoves.”

Jessie’s younger brother Josh graduated Peabody in 2012 and also attended Charlottesville High School. He is currently a student at the University of Chicago, working on a degree in Environmental and Urban Studies . Read more about Jessie and Josh on our website !
This Week in Middle School...

Locker clean out season! Reunite with long missing Tupperware containers! Find all your missing socks! Our lockers have served our students well and it is time for a well deserved break! Please send in sturdy bags, such as reusable grocery bags, for student use during locker clean out next week. We will recycle as much as we can but be prepared for copious amounts of belongings.
Shark Tank

The 8th graders finished their biotech company proposals last week and pitched their ideas to a group of "potential investors" comprised of Peabody staff members. Their companies were tasked with creating a product that uses real world biological tools to target and modify an existing gene in order to provide a service. To educate their board of potential investors, the students provided their company websites which they coded in html over the past few weeks in technology class. The young entrepreneurs used all they learned through this project while they pitched their business ideas to a skeptical group and handled their challenging questions in real time. After hearing from all the companies, the potential investors voted on the company that had the most well thought out and constructed business. Congratulations to Evelyn Lepsch and Len Colley for their winning biotech company, Cerebrix! Their company offers products that detect and replace mutated DNA associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Middle School End of Year Teacher Gifts


I f you would like to participate in the group gift for middle school teachers, please submit your contribution BY MONDAY, JUNE 4th, end of the day - in cash (in a sealed envelope with your name on it) or a check made out to Rachel Lloyd Miller to the envelope in the Front Office that says MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER GIFTS. Please do not hand checks to Ms. Aimee or leave them on her desk.

Also there is a SPECIALS TEACHERS gift contribution through TUESDAY, JUNE 5th only. Drop contributions (cash or check written to Peabody School; memo: specials gift) in the SPECIALS envelope in the Front Office. The amount collected will be divided equally among specials teachers - this process is handled by the PPF.
Life Happens

It is that time of year when we unveil our top ten reasons students are late. We appreciate all our parents being committed to getting their children to school on time. However, we understand that "life happens" sometimes and the kids are late. Here is a smattering of actual reasons (yes we read the book), as reported by our parents, for tardiness at Peabody. Graduation and Promotion

Can you believe that the end of school is less than a month away! We look forward to a special day on Friday, June 8th as we both honor our graduates and celebrate the end of a another wonderful year.

Here are some details of the day:

The graduation and awards ceremony for 8th graders and Middle School award winners will take place in the Batten gym. Seating will start at 8:30AM and the ceremony will start at 9:00AM and last approximately an hour. The entire student body will be present to honor our 8th graders. Due to limited seating, this event is only attended by students, Grade 8 parents, their guests, and parents of award winners.

Starting at 10:30AM, we will also hold a promotion ceremony for the rest of our students, also in the Batten gym. This ceremony will be followed by classroom celebrations in your student's homeroom. There will be more information to come about that piece and parking for the event. All our welcome to this ceremony.

  • The Last Day for Homework Club is Wednesday, June 6th. There will be After-school through June 7th.
