This article below appeared as part of the Research & Innovation in North Carolina section of the July 2018 issue of Business North Carolina. In this issue,
the Board of Science, Technology and Innovation highlighted the fact that our state's universities are one of the strongest sources of innovation. High tech start-ups are also leading the way, forming in NC at a rate nearly 25% higher than the national average. The special "Research North Carolina" section features articles about ECU, FTCC, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, UNCW, and the SBTDC's Technology Development and Commercialization Program.
Lucinda Camras comes from a long line of inventors. Her father, Carl Camras, discovered a new class of drugs (prostaglandin analogues) to treat glaucoma that remain the first-line treatment in the field. By the time she was 19, she and her father had created a new glaucoma device and surgical approach.
They worked together on the design and towards pursuing licensing agreements and funding. In 2009, Lucinda's father passed away, but she obtained a PhD and continued their work to make their idea into a viable product.

SBIR Road Tour Wrap-up In Durham
|
The SBIR Road Tour event was held over two days in North Carolina. On June 21, the SBTDC organized and carried out a full day SBIR/STTR proposal training session located at the Chesterfield facility in downtown Durham. The event was presented by SBTDC Tech Team members and included sessions with proposal reviewers, award recipients and economic development partners. 75 persons were in attendance. Day two of the Roadshow was held on June 22 at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. SBIR program managers from 13 agencies and branches attended where they presented an overview of their particular program and carried out approximately 150 one-on-one meetings with attendees. Approximately 200 persons were in attendance.

NIH SBIR/STTR Deadline Approaches

September 5th is the next deadline for submission of SBIR and STTR proposals to NIH. If you are planning to submit a proposal, here are a few steps to take NOW:
- Schedule a meeting with one of the SBTDC's tech counselors (email John Ujvari to get started).

- Contact the program manager at the institute that is the best fit for your R&D
- Draft your specific aims page - this will be the outline for the rest of your proposal. Contact us for an outline of the specific aims page.
- Request letters of support NOW
- Ask colleagues / experts if they are willing to review the technical sections of your proposal

Tech Venture Conference Coming in September
|
The CED Tech Conference attracts 800+ attendees including entrepreneurs, investors, corporate leaders, and industry visionaries from across the nation to the Raleigh Convention Center in North Carolina. Now in its 34th year, the two-day event will be held September 12-13, 2018 with a mission to showcase entrepreneurial companies and connect them with partners, investors, and other organizations to accelerate business growth.
