Winneconne Students Show
their School Spirit at Sovereign Days
Thank you to our teachers and students who participated in Winneconne Sovereign Days! Thanks for showing the community our great school spirit!
Please welcome Don Smith,
New WCSD Director of Learning

Winneconne Community School District (WCSD) has a new director of learning in place for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.

Most recently, Smith worked in Waupaca as the director of teaching and learning, as well as supporting Garth Larson here at WCSD. Prior to that, he was a principal in the Fond du Lac School District for seven years, at the STEM Academy and STEM Institute, following seven years as a high school science teacher in the Freedom Area School District.

Originally from Appleton, Smith graduated from Appleton North High School, then Lawrence University and Marian University. He’ll serve the district full-time and will direct and coordinate services involving curriculum, instruction, assessment and data to support continuous school improvement and high levels of learning for all students in the Winneconne Community School District, while also providing support and guidance to district staff.

“I am beyond impressed when I look at the current state of teaching and learning at WCSD! Everyone I have interacted with has been wonderful. It is clear to me the staff here will do whatever it takes to ensure all their students succeed.” said Smith. “There are only a couple other districts in the area doing the type of great work being done here in Winneconne. I feel lucky to join the district!”

Smith shared he and his wife, Kelly, have a blended family, including his daughter and Kelly’s son and daughter. They currently reside in Oshkosh.

Department of Justice Grant
New safety measures will be possible with financial assistance from the grant.
Perhaps you've heard on the news that many schools in Wisconsin received Department of Justice grants to upgrade safety measures. Winneconne Community School District received $52,000. This money will be used to upgrade all three buildings with a server to support and upgrade our camera system and provide a bullet-resistant window film for all the school entries.
The Road Ahead: Future Projections

Winneconne Community School District continues its Journey.

As many of you know, WCSD embarked on a journey - A Journey to the Future. It started with the creation of our motto, Destination School District. This motto has been the driving force to continually strive to make WCSD a great school district for students, families, staff, and a district that makes our community members proud.

Chapter one of our journey centered around our now completed STEAM renovation/addition and our Winneconne Community Arts Center (WCAC). As we turn to chapter two of our Journey to the Future, we decided we needed to look down the road a bit in order to ensure our positive momentum moving forward.

The Road Ahead: Community Growth Projections and School Facilities Study
Maintaining school buildings is an ongoing effort. The WCSD Board of Education is creating a long-term facilities plan to develop a well-thought out coordinated approach. The first step is to obtain current information so that we may make strategic decisions about future investments into its school buildings and infrastructure.

The most recent facilities study occurred approximately 15 years ago. The Board recently approved two new studies to equip the Board and administration team with up-to-date information. On July 16, the Board of Education approved an enrollment projection study and a facilities study. Both studies are to occur this school year. The Board selected Plunkett Rayish Architectural firm for the long-range facilities study. It selected MDRoffers, a consulting firm, to complete the population study. The updated information will serve as a roadmap for a facilities vision for the next 15 plus years.

The facilities study will examine and then provide a report about the physical condition of all the District's buildings. The population study will identify where population growth and change is likely to occur within the District’s boundaries and present information about the impact that any projected change will have on District programs and facilities.

The Board and the administrative team expect the first phase of results sometime between November and December. We will most certainly keep you informed on the progress of these studies. We will also present their findings to the community. It should be interesting. Stay tuned!

The members of Board of Education and I are committed to keeping the community informed about the District’s progress and all decisions impacting our schools. If you have any questions, please contact me at (920) 582-5802 ext. 3141 or larsonm@w-csd.org .
