News From the April Board Meeting
New Initiative Will Transform Student Learning
The recently adopted district strategic plan, Navigate 28, has an ambitious mission to “Empower every learner to be an engaged, confident, caring and inspired citizen.” The district is now in the process of designing action plans that will help advance the new mission, vision and goals.

We are excited to announce the first initiative launched under the Navigate 28 banner is “Learning First,” a comprehensive plan to purposefully integrate innovative teaching and learning strategies with technology.

“Learning First” gets its name from the book “Learning First, Technology Second” by Liz Kolb. In the text, Kolb outlines a framework in which instructional technology can engage, enhance, and extend learning in powerful ways. While teachers are already doing this in classrooms, the initiative will take it to the next level. The district will transition to an iPad environment over the next three years.

Professionals Offer
NBJH Students Inspiration
Northbrook Junior High students were treated to an afternoon of inspiration at the bi-annual LIFT day held April 27.
Thirty-nine volunteers represented a wide range of professions, from a pediatrician, structural engineer, fashion stylist, firefighter, sports marketing, film producer, architect and author.
Organized by the PTO, the Looking Into the Future Together day offered an exceptional opportunity for our students to dream big, set career goals, or just learn about something new.
"I love to see the people from community giving back to the school. It’s really neat for kids to see what’s going on around them outside of school within the community and beyond,” said Deborah Phandis, the PTO chair of the event.
First Officer Ted McCaughan, a commercial pilot with United, talks about his career path and the training required to NBJH students during LIFT Day. " Since I was a little boy I wanted to be a pilot but I had no idea how to do it," he said. "It's nice to be able to provide a little direction."
