"Leadership Marshfield" Group Extends Donation Deadline
There is still time to help a "Leadership Marshfield" group that is partnering with Soup or Socks to support families needing assistance in dressing their children as they begin a new school year. The group's project is entitled "Best First Day". An initial clothing drive in March went very well and the community has been very generous, but several partnering agencies have agreed to keep donation boxes for clothing items at their locations until June 15. Qualifying families will be registering for the August 8th event by June 1st, so this extended drive may help with additional needs that were not initially anticipated. Collections for new clothing will continue through June 15th at MACCI, SOS, and United Way.

Clothing collections will be for the following most needed items for boys and girls grades K-12:
-    New Tennis /Athletic Shoes
-    New Leggings or Athletic Pants

MAKING AN IMPACT...

Gary is a 16 year old that presented with "anxiety, depression, and hearing voices".  He entered therapy after having a breakdown, leading to missed school and a near inpatient hospitalization.  He was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (NOS).

Upon engaging in therapy, Gary shared that he had "no energy" and it had been this way for about a year.  He also brought up anxiety issues, mainly saying he had "worried thoughts", which also began about a year ago.  He specified depression as a problem, and relayed that he does not sleep well, getting about "3-4 hours per night".  He said this has been this way for the past two years, but mainly "this past summer".  He introduced that he has been "hearing negative voices" over the last 6 months.  When asked what the voices said he replied, "You're not good enough."  Gary admitted to suicidal ideation.

Over the last few years, Gary had not seen his father much, nor regularly. His mother shared that he might see father about once every 2 months. Gary shared that father wasn't involved in his life unless he was doing something/achieving something.  This was an issue for Gary and it was possible that quitting sports and grades dropping were Gary's response to his father's absence.  Ultimately, the stress on Gary from not feeling good enough caused anxiety, which then eroded his energy to the point of depression.

Through therapy, Gary was able to understand his relationship with his father and determine he is not able to control his father's actions, thereby letting go of the negative messages he felt from father's lack of involvement in his life.  Gary began to improve his grades and his mood and anxieties are much better.

Your gift to United Way, provides access to supportive health services, like Child and Family Counseling, and greatly impacts children and families in our community. Your generosity is making a difference.
