November 2019 Foot Trimming Workshops in Nepal

elephant foot trimming workshop

EAI will be back in Nepal for two foot trimming workshops this November.

Taught by EAI founder and CEO Carol Buckley, the workshops provide a unique, life-changing experience. Participants are asked to sponsor a mahout, with whom they'll work side-by-side, honing and gaining skills to improve elephants' health and welfare in immediate, tangible ways.

Please note: the workshop is appropriate for professionals seeking to learn or enhance their foot trimming skills.

When & Where:
  • November 11-15, 2019: Tiger Tops Elephant Camp, Amaltari
  • November 18-22, 2019: Sauraha

Help a Mahout Attend the Workshop

sponsor a mahout

EAI supporters often ask what they can do to help. You can make an important contribution by sponsoring a mahout to attend the workshop.

Poorly paid and low status, mahouts have few chances to improve their skills. Mahouts who have participated in past EAI workshops were hungry for information and excited to improve their skills. And when they leave the workshop, they are eager to share what they've learned with their fellow mahouts back home.

For only $50, you will cover a mahout's transportation, housing, food and a small stipend.
Now You Can See More of ERNA

We continue to expand our network of high-definition, live-streaming video cameras at Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA) and have recently installed our second camera near Turtle Lake. We'll continue to add more cameras so you'll be able to keep an eye on our future residents throughout the habitat.

If two cameras are good, three are better and four are better still. If you'd like to help us keep expanding our network, please consider making a contribution of any amount to our EleCam fund.
Get to Know EAI Advisory Council Member Dr. K.K. Sarma

EAI's Advisory Council  members have an incredible and varied range of knowledge about elephants and their lives.

One of our council members, Dr. K.K. Sarma, is a pioneer in anesthetic research on elephants and an expert in human-elephant relationships and elephant welfare, health and management. He treats hundreds of sick elephants and organizes health care for more than 700 captive elephants throughout India every year.

The Better India recently interviewed Dr. Sarma about his life, work and passion for elephants. Read more about Dr. Sarma's work and how his interest in elephants began.
What is a Caregiver?

EAI believes that one of the most crucial factors in the rehabilitation of captive-held elephants is the relationship they develop with their caregivers.

How does a caregiver forge a bond with a newly retired elephant? How does the caregiver interact with the elephant to create an atmosphere of safety so she can heal emotionally and physically? How does the caregiver help an elephant move past her fears and anger to move into a life of free choice and autonomy?

EAI's Caregiver Philosophy outlines what we've learned through years of helping elephants regain physical and emotional health.
