Seniors Day at MOV!

The    first Tuesday of every month    is $5 admission for seniors (65+).   Explore a collection of stories that depict Vancouver’s thriving multi-cultural communities prior to the second World War. Visit a retro beauty parlour, explore historic childhood memorabilia, and learn about the successful Asahi baseball team, one of the early Japanese Canadian baseball teams in the Lower Mainland.The  neon signs gallery is also a favourite of many guests!
Back to the Roots: A Chinese Canadian Gardening Workshop

Join Charles Luong of Roots on the Roof , UBC’s sustainable food organization, for an informative planting workshop at MOV’s recently developed Backyard Garden. Learn proper planting techniques and caring of unique Asian vegetables not typically found in Western grocery stores. 

Participants will additionally harvest, create their own take away “Vegetable Bouquet” and design planters which will house provided seeds. This is a great opportunity to learn about the care for unique vegetables and the horticultural traditions of Vancouver’s Chinese backyard gardens.
Block Printmaking Workshop

Design your own block print cards in this instructional workshop that includes carving, colour mixing and a lesson about Coast Salish artists use of negative and positive space!

Artist Atheana Picha of Kwantlen First Nation will guide you through block print making techniques to create your own designed cards. Using safety cut blocks you will carve designs that will produce lovely prints on blank cards. Participants should also anticipate mixing their own ink colours, providing unique and creative ways to highlight your beautiful designs. Each participant will leave with a set of cards and new found appreciation for Coast Salish use and execution of negative and positive spaces in their art practice. Participants do not require previous experience in block printing or in ink design.

Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives

The  Museum of Vancouver  and  Nature Vancouver  proudly present the illuminating exhibition,  Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives  . This exhibition delves into the life stories of local animals and plants—how they relate to each other and how they connect people to nature in the city. Scenic design, videos, taxidermy, crowdsourcing technologies, and the display of natural specimens breathe life into these tales of co-habitation.
There is Truth Here: Creativity and Resilience in Children’s Art from Indian Residential and Day Schools

There is Truth Here focuses on rare surviving artworks created by children who attended the Inkameep Day School (Okanagan), St Michael’s Indian Residential School (Alert Bay); the Alberni Indian Residential School (Vancouver Island) and Mackay Indian Residential School (Manitoba). The focus of the exhibition is not on the schools themselves, but upon witnessing the experiences of the survivors as conveyed through their childhood artworks – for some the only surviving material from their childhoods.

Haida Now: A Visual Feast of Innovation and Tradition  features an unparalleled collection of Haida art, boasting more than 450 works.  Local Haida Artists shared their insights and knowledge about the art pieces, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience a powerful way to engage with the worldview and sensibility of the Haida people while gaining greater appreciation for the role museums can play in the reconciliation movement.

Dragon Jars and Lotus Bowls: Asian Ceramics from the Jean Mackay Fahrni Collection

The Museum of Vancouver is excited to present, with the Canadian Society for Asian Arts (CSAA) ,  Dragon Jars and Lotus Bowls: Asian Ceramics from the Jean Mackay Fahrni Collection. This MOV-CSAA collaboration features Asian ceramics from the Jean MacKay Fahrni collection, generously donated to the Museum in 1992 by the Hongkong Bank of Canada and contains many pieces that have not been publicly displayed.
MOV Backyard Garden

The  Museum of Vancouver , in partnership with the  University of British Columbia  , presents to you a garden exhibit on the front lawn of the museum that is inspired by the multicultural backyard gardens of Vancouver. We recognize that food has and continues to be a medium for civic engagement for migrant communities across the city. This experiential and inclusive garden exhibit celebrates the often untold stories of the backyard gardening community.

Two monumental poles return home to Haida Gwaii

Two monumental poles came home this weekend after the Museum of Vancouver (MOV) and UBC’s Museum of Anthropology returned them to Haida Gwaii.
The cultural artifacts ended up in Vancouver by being taken, appropriated, stolen, or sold throughout the years.

“It’s taken over 20 years of the Haida Nation knocking on the doors of mainstream museums. It’s taken over $1 million in cash, sweat, labour, in-kind contributions to bring home and rebury just over 500 of our ancestors. Now our Nation is focusing on our belongings held in museums. How we found ourselves in this position, why we do this work, and where it is taking us (all) is a story that should be known and never be forgotten,” Nika Collison, co-chair of the Haida Repatriation Committee and executive director at the Haida Gwaii Museum, stated.
