12 Tips To Caring For
Your Senior Dog's Coat

Your elderly canine friend might be a little grumpy about being brushed as she ages. Here are some tips to keep grooming sessions stress-free while taking a few extra steps to ensure her day-to-day comfort.

Keep Sessions Short

Older dogs may not be able to stand comfortably for more than a few minutes at a time due to arthritis. Lying down might put pressure on hips or spine. Let your dog move around a bit during the grooming session. She might try to leave or start panting because she is stressed or sore, so let her tell you when she's had enough.

Groom More Often

You don't want to tug on your dog's skin while pulling at heavy mats, so brush more often to prevent small problems from developing into big projects.
Handsome Brothers
Take on the Town!

You may have seen brothers PugPug and Navy out and about living the good life around Asheville. You cannot miss their good looks and charm!

Even though Navy and PugPug are not actually related, they have an amazing bond and together they can cause a little mischief, as anyone who has a sibling can attest to. They did not grow up together but they are living their senior years to the fullest in Asheville with their human family Rachael and Peter.

The story started in 2005 when Navy was adopted by the family from a shelter in New Hampshire. When he was found as a puppy wandering the streets of Nashua, New Hampshire, they didn't believe Navy was a pug due to how underweight he was.  But after a long bath and warm meal, he proved everyone wrong by showing he was all pug. In true pug fashion, Navy LOVES food and will do anything for a treat!
Booster Time: Influenza Vaccine

Summer is fast approaching and it will be time to booster the Bivalent Influenza vaccine (protecting against the H3N2 and H3N8 strains) that your dog received last year at the walk-in vaccine clinics held at Animal Hospital of North Asheville.  Many dogs vaccinated at the walk-in clinic will be out of sync with their annual physical exam and the remaining vaccines. We are recommending that if your dog is due for their annual physical exam in the next couple of months (before the influenza vaccine is due), please schedule as normal and we will update the influenza at that appointment. If your dog does not have an annual physical exam due in the next couple of months and the influenza vaccine is due, please schedule an appointment with our technicians to update this vaccine.

Corneal Ulcers in Cats

At first you may think your cat is winking at you, but on closer inspection you notice something does not look right. That "wink" is because the eye is red, puffy, has discharge and is painful. Oh no! What should you do? Is this an emergency? Can you wait and see if it improves?

When it comes to your cat or dog's eyes, timely medical care is important! Some injuries can lead to blindness, heavy scarring to the cornea or other complications. If your cat or dog has a foreign body puncturing the eye, such as a thorn stuck into the globe, DO NOT REMOVE the object and seek immediate medical attention. If your cat or dog is squinting or holding their eye closed, DO NOT apply eye medications that you may have at home, since some eye medications can have a steroid in them and can cause complications and make an injury worse. If your pet is holding their eye closed, try to set up a visit to your veterinarian the same day.
