Young Authors' Celebration
Young Authors' participants and their families are invited to our Young Authors' Celebration on  Wednesday, May 9, 8:15-9:15 am in the cafeteria. 

We are so excited to c elebrate the completion of our students' Young Authors' books! This year we have 60 participants in our Young Authors' program!  If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Larcey at  larcey@wlake.org



Submit input by May 10 (K-3)
If you have a child in kindergarten - 3rd grade, the Parent Input message I sent last week is  here

If you would like to submit input about your child  for consideration  during the preparation of class lists for 2018-19,  please send me an email at  sanfilippo@wlake.org   by  Thursday, May 10 . Please do  not   submit requests for specific teachers. 



Kindergarten Field Trips
  • Our half day kindergarten class is going to Lake Erie Nature & Science Center on Monday, May 7 at 11:55 am. Students should not bring backpacks to school that day since they will be leaving promptly at 11:55 am.
  • Our full day kindergarten classes are going to Lake Farmpark on Friday, May 11 at 8:30 am. Students should bring a packed lunch & drink in a disposable bag and dress for the weather. 


4th Grade Dates
4th grade has activities coming up to help prepare students for the transition to Dover Intermediate School (DIS) and celebrate the end of 4th grade! 
  • On Tuesday, May 8 at 8:20 am, our 4th grade classes are going to Dover Intermediate School for an information session and tour.

1st Grade Rainforest Revue
Parents of 1st graders are invited to visit your child's classroom for a "Rainforest Revue" on  Friday, May 11, 8:30-9:00 am. As part of their Sharing the Planet unit, each classroom will present an entertaining program demonstrating what they have learned about rainforests!



MAP (Measures of Academic Progress)
Beginning this week, students in all grades will be taking spring MAP assessments. MAP measures where your child's learning is at this point in the school year. You will receive a MAP report for your child at the end of the school year. If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher.



Bassett Library Update
It is requested that all library books be returned by Friday, May 18. If you have questions or if your child has books checked out that you cannot find, please contact Ms. Craven at  cravenk@wlake.org

Staff Appreciation Week 
THIS WEEK is Staff Appreciation Week! We are celebrating our awesome  staff in a variety of fun and creative ways throughout the week! Our theme is, " Bassett Staff is "Arrrr" Treasure."

Thank you to our students for their hard work on the home project. The jewels and coins are displayed all around the school! Thank you to parents who signed up to bring in food and beverage.

During the month of May, we have so much going on and so many reasons for shout outs!

YOUNG AUTHORS
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Young Authors' program! It will be so exciting to see the books on display at the celebration on Wednesday!

Thank you to our Young Authors' committee for all their efforts in making the Young Authors' program a huge success: Mrs. Larcey, Sarah Tabeling, Mrs. Clark, Erin Westley, and Jenn Richards.  Thank you to Anne at PS Copy for binding the books. Thank you to parents who signed up to bring food and beverage for the celebration.
ART SHOW & ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Thank you to Mrs. Laurenty, Jen Jones, and Gwen Sanchez for their hard work on this event! Thank to everyone who helped mount and hang artwork. Thank you to parents and Westlake High School students who helped at the event. Finally, thank you to all families who attended!

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
May 18

Bassett's spring Walk to School Day is Friday, May 18. Walk to School Day is a fun way for your child to start the day with some fresh air and extra time with friends! Parents are encouraged to participate too!

Here is how you can participate:

 

Walk with your child to school.   -OR- 

 

Meet at the south end of the parking lot at St. Ladislas Church (2345 Bassett Rd) starting at 7:35 am and walk as a group with Bassett's Physical Education teacher, Mr. O'Doherty.

  • Parents are encouraged to walk with your child, but drop-off is permitted.
  • The group will leave the parking lot promptly at 7:50 am and arrive at Bassett at 8:00 am.

SCHOOL SUPPLY KIT SALE
for 2018-19 school year

Our school supply kit sale for 2018-19 is going on now! We are excited to announce that this year we are  partnering with Cleveland-based company, 1st Day School Supplies, for our sale!

Ordering through 1st Day School Supplies is convenient, easy, and hassle-free. Plus, the prices are competitive! You  can get the exact supplies needed for the school year without the hassle and aggravation of running around.

BASSETT PTA INSTALLATION DINNER
May 24, 7:00 pm

Please join us as we thank our current PTA board members and extend a warm welcome to the new PTA board members for the 2018-19 school year!  Our Installation Dinner will be held at Rosewood Grill on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 pm . Dinner will be $20, with the Bassett PTA subsidizing a portion of the dinner as well.

Westlake Night at the Crushers
Bring your family for an exciting night at the Lake Erie Crushers game on Saturday, June 9

Purchase tickets here  and use the password WestlakeSchools Everyone purchasing tickets by May 25 will be entered into a drawing for a chance to be the "Play Ball" kid, guest announcer, guest manager, and other exciting opportunities.

MUSIC A LA MODE
May 12,  Westlake Schools PAC

Music a la Mode is  Saturday, May 12 at the Westlake Schools Performing Arts Center. Music a la Mode is a day of concerts showcasing all Westlake City Schools music groups from grades 5-12.  The concert schedule is here

Admission is $8 for adults; students 18 and under are free. In addition to the concerts, admission includes cake and ice cream in the rotunda. There will also be raffles and concession s. 

Music a la  Mode is the largest fundraiser for  Westlake Music Boosters . Westlake Music Boosters supports Westlake City Schools music programs from preK-12th grade! If you want to volunteer at Music a la Mode, please sign up to help here.

Instrument Petting Zoo
The Instrument Petting Zoo at Music a la Mode will be in the Red Brick Room of Westlake High School, 1:00-3:00 pm. The Instrument Petting Zoo is an opportunity for students and adults to try out instruments! You may try all the instruments you want for $1. All students must be accompanied by an adult. The Instrument Petting Zoo is hosted by Skyline Music.

CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE 

Do you have a desire to enhance all aspects of education for the students of Westlake City Schools?

Would you like to be a visible and proactive link between the Westlake community, the Westlake City Schools and the Board of Education?

The Citizens Advisory Committee is looking for civic-minded individuals to join our efforts. 

The Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) was established over 40 years ago as a voluntary advisory committee to the Westlake Board of Education (BOE) and is comprised of a diverse group of Westlake residents and community representatives. The CAC communicates, researches, evaluates and recommends action plans for consideration by the BOE.

If y ou would like to be part of a team working toward the ultimate enhancement of education provided to Westlake's children, then consider joining the CAC!  Interested community members are encouraged to submit an application for membership
