Upcoming Service
Sunday, August 5 at
10 a.m.

Worship Leader:

Worship Associate:
Rodney Lowe

"Giving Thanks"
Linda Hogan, Chickasaw poet and novelist, writes: "Most of us are taught, somehow, about giving and accepting human gifts, but not about opening ourselves and our bodies to welcome the sun, the land, the visions of sky and dreaming, not about standing in the rain ecstatic with what is offered." During this service focused on gratitude, we'll explore ways we can open ourselves and our bodies to give thanks and celebrate all that the universe has to offer us.

Community Inspired: An Evening of Hope, Healing, and Inspiration for LGBTQ+ People and Allies

This Friday, July 27,  at 6:30 p.m.
FUUSB Meeting House

Presented by Ryan Polly, an Interfaith/Interspiritual Minister and board member of the Pride Center.

During this evening we will leverage spiritual practices (music, meditation, poetry, arts, etc.) from the world's great wisdom traditions to form/grow a new community, gathering in solidarity to heal from religious and social wounding and begin working toward a new tomorrow.

Membership List/Directory
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations and Finance

There was a time when FUUSB produced a hard copy Directory twice a year. These directories were located on a table in the Parlors and free for anyone to take. On the inside cover of the Directory there was always a statement that read something like this: "The information in this directory is provided to facilitate communication within the FUUSB community. It should not be shared outside of FUUSB, and never used for invitations, solicitations, or activities outside of the FUUSB community."

We no longer print copies of the directory (except by special request), but members are still able to obtain an electronic version of the directory by signing up with Access ACS from the website:
http://uusociety.org/members/access-acs-members-stay-connected/ . It's also easy to get large lists of lay leaders by copying things like the MAG (Ministry Area Gathering) list from an email. Please remember that although the medium has changed, the rules still apply. Please do not use any FUUSB list (email or directory) for personal invitations, solicitations or activities. Members of the congregation have the right to expect that their personal information is safe with us. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Classes for Newcomers
Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership

We offer two classes for people who are new to us and would like to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, find out about our activities and meet other newcomers.

New UU Part 1: Getting Acquainted
This 1 ½ hour class is offered every month. The class provides an overview of Unitarian Universalist history and beliefs, including our Seven Principles and Six Sources. It's a great introduction to UUism and also a good way to meet others.

Upcoming classes:
  • August 19 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM)
  • September 9 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM)
New UU Part 2: Getting Connected
This is a 2 ½ hour class that provides information about activities, programs and ministry teams here at First UU.  It also includes time for getting to know each other, and an overview of the process for becoming a member of the congregation. Getting Connected is offered on a  Saturday morning several times per year. Attendance at Getting Acquainted is required before taking Getting Connected, except for people who have already been a member of a UU congregation.

Upcoming classes:
  • August 25 (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM)
For questions or to register for any of these classes, please contact Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership ( [email protected]).

Formation of Pastoral Care Associates
Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership

Part of caring for each other within our society includes providing a listening presence and spiritual companionship in times of need. This is often referred to as "pastoral care" and many of you have benefited from receiving such care from our ministerial staff. However, the needs of a congregation our size, with over 500 members, requires the additional support of specially trained lay members known as Pastoral Care Associates.

This fall we will be forming a team of Pastoral Care Associates at FUUSB. These associates will work closely with our ministers and our Care Network to provide pastoral care to members of our society. We will be holding an orientation session on  September 12 for anyone interested in the team to help answer basic questions and to help those attending determine if they would like to serve as an associate. More formal training and ongoing supervision with our ministerial team will begin in October.

If you are interested in serving as a Pastoral Care Associate or want to find out more information, please reach out to Martha Molpus, Lead Pastoral Care Associate ( [email protected]), or Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and  Membership ( [email protected]).

New Evening Book Group at FUUSB!
Debbie Landauer

Our first selection is The Overstory by Richard Powers. Further selections will be chosen by  participants! No RSVPs required.  All are welcome!

September 14 (through end of "Trunk")
October 12 (rest of book)

6:30 - 8 p.m. -  Susan B. Anthony Room

UU Principle #7:  Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part

Please locate your book copies as soon as possible through the library, a bookstore, or online to read before the discussion date.

THE OVERSTORY
"In his twelfth novel, National Book Award winner Richard Powers delivers a sweeping, impassioned novel of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of...the natural world. From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds,  The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables...exploring the essential conflict on this planet: the one taking place between humans and nonhumans. There is a world alongside ours--vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

The Overstory is a book for all readers who despair of humanity's self-imposed separation from the rest of creation and who hope for the transformative, regenerating possibility of a homecoming. If the trees of this earth could speak, what would they tell us? ' Listen. There's something you need to hear.'"
