FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear   ,

Below is the High School graduation speech given by the Board President, Lalaeh Mourtil, on Monday, June 18th. We hope you enjoy...

"Faculty and Administration, Members of the Board, Our dear Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Siblings, and Of Course, The Class of 2018!

On Friday, at the 5th grade Moving Up Ceremony, Sasha Chernoff announced proudly that in 30 years, when Israel is 100 years old, she will be a renowned Orthopedic Surgeon, raising 4 children - girls I presume?!

What I love about Sasha and her classmates' declarations is that the path ahead looks so bright, clear, straight and simple from their 11 year old vantage point. Tonight, I want to speak to you about the road ahead. I stand here tonight to promise you that indeed the path ahead is very bright for you, the Class of 2018, just as it has been for previous SSLI graduates and for those to come. Your futures are filled with opportunity, because the foundation for success was laid here. You know your reading, writing and arithmetic, but more than facts and skills, you know how to lead, you know how to advocate for yourselves, you know how to see a problem from multiple perspectives and how to approach the world around you critically, yet be open to taking in the beauty around you - in friendships, and in how you care for others. You also know who you are as Jews. You know what your tradition guides you to do and now, after 3 weeks in Israel, you know that the State of Israel will always be an important part of your identity.

While I, and your parents, and your faculty, have full faith that your accomplishments will be profound and impactful, (you have so many awesome achievements already, and clearly from you college acceptances, I am not the only one who has taken note), I also know that the road ahead will have bumps, wrong turns and an occasional pothole. My faith in your future stems from knowing that you have the tools to manage when everything doesn't look perfect. You learned perseverance in Engineering; you figured out how to regroup and change your initial approach in Mock Trial; And when you were told over and over that you were just not ready for your 12th Grade Show, Fiddler on the Roof, you brought the house down with an amazing performance. You have overcome some adversity and that has made you stronger". Click here to continue reading.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy summer,
Laleh Mourtil, Board President

SSLI Parent Association
Dear Schechter Parents,

Thank you for trusting the Parent Association again this year. We have continued to support many of the meaningful programs in our school while introducing some fresh ideas as well. This year has been a beautiful learning experience for our new leadership team and we look forward to making next year even better.

The school year began with our Community Shabbat Dinner with over 200 people singing, eating, davening, and socializing. We had a mix of upper and lower school, new and veteran families, and even some prospective families in attendance.  Again we came together for the Sukkot Dinner held at the Upper School sukkah for a delicious meal and celebration. In January, we held our Ladies Night Out with a great crowd laughing and making new memories.  The spring brought around our first Casino Night and people sure did get lucky! Everything about Casino Night was fresh, fun, and well executed. We had a strong turnout for our final big event of the year. Guests were treated to a night of fun from the moment they entered the room and were greeted with a cocktail, to their exit with raffle prizes in hand. We are already planning our 2018-19 events! Happy 50th Year of Teacher Mr. Levine
This year, the pre-calculus class developed a special bond with their teacher. As Lyndsay L. explained, "Mr. Levine helped us all so much that when he casually mentioned that this is his 50th year teaching, we knew we had to
do something. We decided to surprise him on the last day of class with an ice cream cake with a picture of his face on it. Mr. Levine has done so much for us throughout this year and we are all so grateful to celebrate his 50th anniversary of teaching with him!"
Art News
Jane Incao, Graphic Designer, visited Ms. Gatto's art students at the Upper School. Jane got her start out of college designing night club invitations and the logo for radio station, WLIR. Since then, she has developed a business of her own, YORK Design,  doing work for various products and companies in the states and Italy. Locally she has designed the logos, menus and products for the well known restaurants, Toku, Hendricks, Louie's, and more.   Other clients are Skinny Pizza, and her most recent account, Botticelli Olive Oil.

Jane brought a wealth of information to the students, speaking about business, printing and design.  Most importantly that art is all around us, even in packaging.  We hope to have her visit again next year.
Upper School Music  Round-up
Upper school  students completed the year with a wide variety of musical accomplishments. Students from both middle school and high school participated in NYSSMA festivals including All County and All State levels. Middle school students attended a performance by Project Trio at the Tilles Center, 9th grade students attended a school concert given by the NY Philharmonic featuring the music of Duke Ellington and William Grant Still at Lincoln Center and the 8th grade attended a dress rehearsal of the Metropolitan Opera's Romeo et Juliette. Music elective students wrote  theory exams offered on the AP level or sponsored by the Royal Conservatory of Music. 6th graders learned to play recorder and 9th graders recently completed their final guitar tests in which each student had to play a song utilizing at least three chords. Our Ukulele Club met faithfully each week during lunch to strum tunes and enjoy playing together. Finally, our Freshman Band, starring Emily B., Greg B. and Jacob S. represented our school at the Mid-island JCC event "Our Community Has Talent". Kol Hakavod to all the participants.
From the SSLI ShinShinim
Dear Schechter LI Community,

Unfortunately, the year has come to an end, which means that our time here as ShinShinim is over. In our last two months in the school, we have decided to focus on 3 main subjects - Lag Baomer, Shavuot, and goodbyes.

For example, Tomer and Ella, the lower school shinshinim, have played two life-size versions of two board games that we all know - Monopoly for Lag Baomer, and Shoots and Ladders for Shavuot. Both activities have included sportsmanship, fun games, trivia questions and of course - FUN! All classes have discussed special traditions of these holidays in Israel, and learned about the origins of the holidays, like cooking and eating potatoes in the bonfire on Lag Baomer, or eating all kinds of dairy products and playing with water on Shavuot (that is also known as CHAG HA'MAYIM - water festival).

Another example for the shinshinim programs in the lower school is the goodbye project that Tomer and Ella have made with the kids. They have decided to use the word "shalom" in Hebrew, that translates to hello, goodbye and peace, in order to make a fun art project. Using 5 different colors of paint, a bench and some tape, the students helped the shinshinim to make a colorful bench that will be placed in the school that will remind the kids of Ella and Tomer.

Choosing the word "shalom" has a few meanings - saying goodbye to the students, wishing peace for Israel, and wishing that all students will live in peace with their community, family, and friends.

Todah Rabbah!
Yours, Shinshinim 2017-18.
