Acclaimed Author Visits Lakehill
On Tuesday, March 25, acclaimed Scholastic author Elly Swartz visited Lakehill. Organized by the PFC Book Fair Committee, Swartz spoke with students in grades four through six, inspiring the writers and illustrators of the future by sharing her own experiences as a writer.

After being introduced by two sixth grade students, Harper Kuhn and Paulette Maney , Ms. Swartz was interviewed by two fourth grade reporters,  Anniston Barrett   and  Andres Vann .

Ms. Swartz shared her journey as a writer and the 15-year process of getting her original idea to a book on a shelf. Students were invited to ask questions, and were treated to a preview of the first chapter from Give and Take , her new book coming out in October.

While she loved writing in fourth grade, Ms. Swartz confessed that she was not a very good one. She shared her philosophy: "The thing you are passionate about does not have to be the same thing you are good at today."

She specifically remembers when she decided she wanted to be a writer: after reading Mick Harte Was Here with her children, laughing and crying and experiencing the full range of emotions. She loves being a writer and connecting with her readers, learning what her stories mean to them. Developing a connection with her readers is important to Swartz, and she values the time she can spend in schools and with readers.

Ms. Swartz explained that the inspiration for stories can come from anywhere, from the dinner table to a yoga class, and encourages budding writers to write down their ideas. She spends a lot of time with the characters in her stories, getting to know them, their likes and dislikes, before she writes about them.

Ms. Swartz's advice for young writers is to read voraciously and to write about the things that matter to them. She encourages students to just keep writing and not to worry about what others think of their work. "I love writing more than I fear rejection," she explained.

After speaking with the students, Swartz signed copies of her books Smart Cookie  and  Finding Perfect .

Art Finalist
Senior Julia Bartholow has been named a State Finalist for her Senior Art Portfolio which she has been compiling over the past year in her AP Studio Art class.

TAPPS has become increasingly selective about who they will allow to enter the State Senior Art Portfolio competition. Artists must create six original works, verify the visual references, and write a statement about their work to be submitted to the TAPPS office for acceptance. Only the top ten portfolios from the state in the 3A category are selected as finalists and advance to the final round to be judged on April 1, at the TAPPS Art Championship in Waco.

Bartholow says that, from an early age, she has been encouraged to pursue many artistic endeavors. From the influence of her great-grandfather, Algur Meadows, who loved Spanish art enough to create a museum, to the numerous trips to the Dallas Museum of Art with her mother, art has played a major role in her upbringing. While this initiated her love of art, she continues because of her love of creating.

Bartholow decided to take AP Studio Art this year so she could continue her passion with the freedom that comes with the class in terms of what projects she wants to pursue. "I am most proud of Sweater (pictured above), predominantly because of how much effort I put into it," she says. While Bartholow does not plan to major or minor in art, she hopes to take some art classes in college.

"Julia is a talented artist with her own unique style," said Visual Arts Chair Scott Boles."She is particularly good at her self-portraits. She knows what image she wants to project. I can give her the parameters and she just knocks it out of the park."

Kindergarten Beach Day
Do you know how long a whale is? How do crabs walk? Kindergartners can answer these questions, and many others. Students had an amazing week, learning about the ocean and its animal life. Dressed in their best beach attire, students enjoyed a sea shell hunt and a special snack during this year's Kindergarten Beach Day.

Playing Powder Puff
Lakehill's seventh and eighth grade students took to the field on Wednesday afternoon for a spirited game of powder puff football. The game is a long-standing Lakehill tradition. The seventh grade was victorious in the game, but the real winner was Austin Street Center, the beneficiary of the more than $1,070 that was raised through the event.

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:

NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Anna Somodevilla
Anna Somodevilla has attended Lakehill for four years. She has participated in musical
theater, drama, and choir. She loves choir because it is relaxing. Some of her favorite
memories are from choir performances. Anna has also received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award during her time at Lakehill.

Outside of school, Anna enjoys horseback riding and hanging out with her friends. She
describes herself as friendly, outgoing, and unique.

Anna isn’t quite sure about her ultimate career yet, though she does have an interest in
the film industry. She plans to attend to Texas Wesleyan University in the fall, and is excited to become more independent when she goes to college.

Anna really loved high school at Lakehill. "Even though it is tough, it is a lot of fun if you have good friends and if you are open to adventure." She advises younger Lakehill students, "Be yourself and have fun."
