SPRING 2019
FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

Greetings! For those of you that do not know me yet, my name is Matt Fink and I am a new development officer at Loyola. Like many of you, I am an alum of this great institution. Having graduated in 2012, I am thrilled to be back! Every morning when I drive up The Hill , I am overcome with nostalgia and memories of my great experience at Loyola.

One task that Sam Smith - my counterpart -  and I are taking very seriously is our alumni and alumni parent engagement. Many of you have not heard from Loyola in a long time. We are here to change that! You can expect quarterly newsletters,
more non-fundraising events, and a deeper sense of community.

Loyola has a rich tradition of excellence. That has translated to an immense amount of success our alumni have had in their careers and communities. We want to shout these accomplishments loud and proud! To do that, we need your help. If you know of someone we should spotlight, please fill out this short form .

Please update your contact information so we can stay in touch with you!
I look forward to connecting with many of you in the coming months!

God Bless,

Matt Fink '12

ENDOWMENT OF THE QUARTER
The Thom Family Scholarship Fund
The Thom Family Scholarship Fund was established by Cindy and Jeff Thom as an endowment to offer financial assistance for the purpose of attending Loyola Catholic School as a student in grades K-5. These scholarships are for students who would not be able to attend Loyola without financial assistance. The Thom family is a strong advocate of Christian education and believes that all children should have
the opportunity to attend Loyola.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

BOB ERKEL '81

Bob Erkel is a highly successful Wealth Management Advisor with Erkel and Erkel Northwestern Mutual, located in Prior Lake, Minnesota. He and his wife Kathy, also from Mankato, have been blessed with three grown children and seven grandchildren.

Bob and Kathy were high school sweethearts that lived just five houses away from each other. Both attended Minnesota State University, Mankato in the 1980s. During college, they married and had two children while full-time students.

After realizing his dream was not to be a CPA, like he once thought, Bob was accepted as an intern with Northwestern Mutual and began what would turn out to be a lifelong career. “As an intern, they had me running the intern program, which was highly unusual,” said Bob. In fact, one of his first interns was fellow Crusader and financial advisor Doug Helget.

“The internship was a great opportunity because it allowed me to work with clients and be in management ,” Bob said. “The cool thing was they had me sitting in the exact same training sessions as advisors who were full time!”

What he likes best about his career is the balance of financial, tax, and personal life planning.

“There isn’t one other person in my clients’ life’s that knows them like I do,” Erkel said. “No one else, except maybe their spouse, knows their dreams, medical history, and financial situation. I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Bob believes that Loyola had an important and positive impact in his life. Former longtime teacher and track coach Chris Thiem and football coach Jim Korth played an important role in his life by building discipline and the desire to excel. Teachers and coaches at Loyola challenged him and expected him to succeed.

“The expectation was that we’d succeed – success wasn’t the exception,” noted Bob. “As a result, we challenged each other. I am as good as I am because of where I am and from. Each place that we’re at becomes a part of us.”

ROB COLBY '73
Rob Colby, Loyola class of 1973, presented at his alma mater South Central College in North Mankato, MN with his senior year project - a handmade audio mixer. Colby is one of South Central College’s most distinguished alumni having worked extensively with late music artist Prince throughout the 80’s. He became known in the music industry for his excellent working knowledge of both analog and digital audio mixing all while minding his “p’s and q’s” as he described. He has worked for many renowned artists including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Pat Benatar, Janet Jackson, Ricky Martin, and Bob Seger, just to name a few. After working for Britney Spears for five years during her residency in Las Vegas, he has grown tired of working on the road. He is now giving back to the community through volunteering at his church, and teaching at the Institute of Production and Recording.

MRS. TERRI McGEE
Theresa A. (Terri) McGee, completed her life's journey on March 18 surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. McGee taught social students at Fitzgerald and Loyola for 35 years, teaching three generations of students. She was a beloved teacher with famously high expectations of her students. She encouraged them to believe in themselves as much as she believed in them. In 2006, she was inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame. Terri is survived by her husband Sid, her sons Jon (Ann), Tim (Ann), Greg (Annie) and Brian (Andrea) and 11 grandchildren.
LOYOLA NEWS
Loyola band and choir students enjoyed a trip to NYC last week. The trip not only included taking in all of the famous New York landmarks but also providing service while they were there.
Congratulations to the Loyola Speech Team for placing second at subsections!

Sections will be held in St. Peter on April 5.
At Loyola, 7th graders complete a History Day project as part of their social studies curriculum. Students select a topic related to the theme of "Triumph and Tragedy" and present their findings in either a research paper, exhibit, documentary, performance or website. Students present their projects to Loyola staff with the chance to move on to Regional History Day at MSU, Mankato. This year, 13 Loyola students moved on to present at the Regional History Day on March 19.

Congratulations Chloe Michaels & Jaedyn Fellenz, who will be heading to the state competition May 4 with their performance about Rose Will Monroe!
Each month, a class at Loyola is recognized as Class of the Month for displaying positive attributes in the classroom, hallway, with peers and teachers.

Recently, Mrs. Koch’s kindergarten class was named the class of the month for being good listeners, for following directions, and for having awesome hallway manners. Mr. Bemmels visited their classroom to congratulate them and share a special treat!
