Centennial Update
|
There are still plenty of opportunities to become involved. Specifically, we have two requests at this time. First, we need a committee to help curate a tribute to the iconic Rochester buildings and architects of the past 100 years that will be on display at the Design Awards Gala on June 14. History buffs and creative exhibit designers needing an outlet are all welcome. READ MORE

Lobby Day - May 8, 2019
The origin of most trade and professional associations can be traced back to one overarching need - a unified voice to advocate on behalf of a group of individuals who share similar interests. Like many professional associations, AIA New York State (AIANYS), an organization of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), came into being out of the need to coalesce and amplify the concerns of the profession, the built environment, and the protection of the public's health, safety, and welfare. Thus, the primary reason for the creation and organization of AIANYS was to provide its members, and the profession as a whole, with a credible voice in the halls of state government, Government advocacy continues to be the foundation for its existence today. This was the fourth year of the Girls in Architecture and Engineering Program, and it was held at the Penfield Public Library throughout March.
It is intended to be a fun and interesting program to introduce middle school girls to science-, technology-, engineering-, art- and math-based (STEAM) careers that they can explore further in high school courses and possibly consider for their own career options.

Featured Article - RBJ Article by Jason Streb, AIA
Rochester a pendulum of old and new design The City of Rochester has not been kind to its existing building stock. The Urban Renewal trend of the mid-60s and '70s favored car-centric development, and Rochester - being a wealthy enough city at the time to participate - took advantage of that. Neighborhoods and buildings were sacrificed for the convenience of expressways and parking lots, leaving holes in the urban fabric that echo today.

Featured Building
Project: Orange County Government Center Architect: Clark Patterson Lee Photographer: Kim Smith Photography
When the Orange County Government Center in Goshen, New York opened in 1971 it was praised as a masterpiece for both an architectural style (brutalism) and one of its signature architects, Paul Rudolph. Time has not been kind for both the building and its challenging, misunderstood style.

AIA Rochester - Centennial Instagram Campaign
|
Our Centennial Instagram project is underway! Follow us on Instagram at @aiaroc. The images are also being cross-posted on Facebook at AIA Rochester. Thanks to the efforts of GG Garzon, Associate AIA - our new Social Media Director, and the beautiful images from our member firms, our Instagram 365 Initiative has reached over 1.6K people on Facebook alone.
If you are an AIA Rochester member firm, it's not too late to participate. All firms are welcome and encouraged to participate in one of our public advocacy campaigns for 2019! All you need to do is email us 10 images (preferably JPG - 300dpi), include your firm name, provide a short description of each photo, and list the name of the photographer. All images must be of locations in our Rochester region and can be images of buildings, a specific image of a building element, community project, or a firm event. The goal is to promote local architecture firms, local architects and local good design. GET CONNECTED and be part of the movement! Questions, email Linda at lbhewitt@aiaroc.org
