Triangle Insight
Welcoming Committee
Sangha means spiritual community, and it is treasured because without it awakening cannot be sustained."
--Jack Kornfield,
After the Ecstasy, the Laundry
Sangha is one of the precious jewels of Buddhist practice, yet when new to a sangha, it can be difficult to meet others, learn what programs are offered, and feel a sense of belonging. The Welcoming Committee was formed to make this process easier, help newcomers feel welcome, and foster the experience of connection and community. Our intentions include having a diverse committee that will support a rich, inclusive sangha where all feel welcome and safe.
We're also available to talk with you at the end of Wednesday sangha, and we're providing name tags for those open to wearing one. The name tags are reusable, and we'll keep them for you between meetings. These are just a few of our initiatives and ideas. As a new committee, our plans are a work in progress, and we're very interested in your suggestions, feedback, and questions.
Our members and our other initiatives are listed on our
web page
. Please talk with one of us or email us at
[email protected]
.
With shared commitment to the dharma, we hope our work will be of benefit to all who join us in this practice.

A Memorial Day Weekend
Residential Retreat
with Jeanne van Gemert & Ron Vereen
|
Register soon -- only two spaces remain!
At times it is helpful to inquire as to why we are on this path of insight meditation and to what led us to this practice to start with. Perhaps it was something heard or read which extolled the virtue of bringing more calm into our lives. Unfortunately, many forsake the journey when experience does not always measure up to the expected results. It is easy to accept the pleasant abidings, but what about the rest of life?
Most of us just need more skills to face what's difficult. This retreat is an invitation to practice being open to the totality of existence without exclusion, creating a container of support for deepening inquiry and investigation. Qualities of recognition, receptivity, and curiosity will be supported through various forms of practice. Deeply held conditioned patterns can then be seen, not as obstacles to practice, but rather as vehicles toward greater insight and surrender. This seeing that frees becomes the gateway through which to open to the formless awareness that has been and always will be available.
Open to participants with all levels of meditation experience, this retreat will be conducted in Noble Silence to support moving into greater stillness and quiet. In addition to the forms of practice, group interviews with the teachers will provide further support for inquiry and investigation.
Jeanne van Gemert and Ron Vereen have years of meditation experience and are co-founders of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community, graduates of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader Program, and instructors in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program.

Exploring Our Inner & Outer World: A Weel-Long Non-Residential Retreat with Sasha Loring |
As humans we make many assumptions about the nature of our self. Meditation helps clarify those assumptions and thereby begins the process of reducing the suffering brought about by falsely held notions. Additionally, we project our misapprehensions onto the world and create unnecessary struggles with grasping and clinging. Investigating this is the study of emptiness, which is a core part of the Buddhist path (recent research shows that meditating on emptiness led to a significant decrease in negative emotions). This retreat will integrate meditation with a series of guided experiences that will reveal usually hidden aspects of our motivation and actions, and will lead to a more insightful and relaxed relationship with ourselves, others and the world.

Research Project Opportunity:
The Mindful Experience of Meditators
Online Survey from the University of Colorado, Boulder
|
This research project is now underway and led by Joel Fishbein, Doctoral student in the Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Colorado, Boulder. It is gathering participants with the aid of the
Insight Meditation Community of Colorado, Common Ground Meditation in Minnesota, and 20 other insight meditation communities.
TIMC was identified as a source of dedicated meditators who may be interested in completing the online survey (about 15 minutes) as part of this study.
T
he project is approved by an Internal Review Board at the University of Colarado, Boulder (for research with human subjects), and is in accord with Federal confidentiality requirements.
Description:
The purpose of the study is to understand the experiences of meditators. This includes the ways that meditators think, experience emotions, and see themselves. We know from previous research that meditation can influence people's everyday experiences, and additional research is needed to understand how. This study will be of benefit for the scientific community and the general public to understand how meditating may shape people's perspectives.
The TIMC Board wishes to provide the Sangha with an opportunity to participate in this survey.

TIM SPIRITUAL FRIENDS GROUPS
|
Kalyana Mitta Groups
Racial Affinity Groups
Having admirable people as friends, companions, and colleagues is actually th
e whole of the holy life.
~ The Buddha
In challenging times, we can feel as if storm clouds have arisen. The sky darkens, our view narrows, our bodies tighten, and we're blown off course by the winds of our emotions. One of the gifts of a Spiritual Friends Group is to offer safe harbor. The trust and intimacy that develop in these groups allow us to share, be heard, and listen. This mindful sharing provides illumination; we can see more clearly, and with wiser view and softer heart, we continue on our journey.
As Phillip Moffitt states his article,
The Three Wholesome Exchanges of the Heart
, "We all need to have someone hear our fears, failures, triumphs, and dreams....This exchange is essential to our personal and spiritual development because when we are being witnessed, it allows us to really hear our own authentic voice."
Please read the following sections to learn more about current activities of the Kalyana Mitta and Racial Affinities groups.

The KM-RA Coordinating Team of Sarah Tillis, Karen Ziegler, and Tamara Share expresses deep gratitude for the dedication of our sangha. May our Kalyana Mitta and Racial Affinity groups be of great benefit to all.

, for those in their 20s and 30s. A Kalyana Mitta group for members in the same phase of life can offer a special community for the spiritual growth of each member and the group as a whole.
We currently have openings in four groups:
- Insight Dialogue KM Group for individuals with Insight Dialogue experience
- Durham Young Adults KM Group, which is being formed
- Secular Buddhism KM Group: Study Group
Chapel Hill-Carrboro KM Group has a waiting group.
For information about our KM program, please email or talk with Sarah, or visit our

Members of our Racial Affinity groups (the groups are affectionately known as RAGs) continue to deepen self-awareness around issues of race in small, racially homogeneous groups that integrate the dharma into members' personal and collective exploration. Waking up to white supremacy and the ways we have internalized it is a painful process, and the acceptance we bring to each other, as well as our shared understanding of the dharma, helps us to heal and strive to act more constructively in the world.
Racial Affinity group members share a commitment to racial equality and are guided by Ruth King's work, yet each group develops and evolves in its own way.
Two new RAGs have formed out of the recent Mindful of Race workshop led by Ruth King in Durham, NC (March 15-17).
If you are interested in joining a Racial Affinity group or would like more information, you are invited to contact
Karen Ziegler, Coordinator through the end of April, or
Beth Lauderdale, (
[email protected])
who will take on RAGs Coordinator responsibilities, starting May 1st.

This exchange pairs needed service with volunteers to match. If you wish be notified when another member needs and requests support, send an email to [email protected] asking to be added to the list of potential volunteers. Thereafter, you will receive email notifications of care requests. You decide if you can and want to respond to any request. There is no obligation on your part by signing up to receive these notifications.
You can find this information plus details on how to request support on the Shramadana webpage.
Over the next few months we will be reorganizing the Shramadana Project activities. In the meantime, if you have need of any services, please follow the instructions on the Shramadana webpage or you can also speak or email with Gordy Livermore and Mary Mudd for more information.

The Shramadana Project
A Volunteer Initiative
of Triangle Insight
|
The Shramadana Project (SP) has been a volunteer initiative of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community that was organized to address some of the interests expressed within the sangha and for outreach to the community-at-large.
This project has outgrown its current form and now needs to evolve into a more meaningful structure. Some activities including Media Night, workshops and retreats would fit well with a new "Programs Committee".Other volunteer opportunities might better fit with a group or committee for "Engaged Buddhism" or "Community-at-Large Activities," or others yet to be created.
Past activities, meeting minutes and the list of community organizations for the SP are available on the
SP webpage.
Ideas on how to organize these activities are welcome and should be sent to
[email protected].

In response to our efforts to engage the Buddhist teachings around the issues of Racial Justice and Diversity, we would like to recommend the training opportunities available through
OARNC (Organizing Against Racism NC) as a first step in this investigation.
Eighteen

If three or more attend an event from our sangha, you will each get a discount on the fee for being a part of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community.
TI
is contributing $500 to start a scholarship fund for this purpose, and the community is invited to join the initiative by contributing specifically to the scholarship fund. The fund will be available to support TI community members in attending OARNC or other similar trainings. unexamined views of race limit
the mind and human systems.
Scholarships will be available on a case by case basis to help supplement the cost of registration. To contribute now through PayPal, please donate Here.
OARNC offers two phases of training, and the latter trainings are designed to assist us in bringing this knowledge back to our community so as to guide us more skillfully in addressing these issues in Triangle Insight. The Practice of Insight Dialogue
|
Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice and is offered at Triangle Insight once monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month. It brings the mindfulness and tranquility of silent meditation directly into our experience with other people. The new website for Insight Dialogue is an excellent resource for learning more about the practice:
www.metta.org.
The evening begins with silent meditation practice, followed by gentle mindful movement, and then shifting into dyad practice where interpersonal mindfulness is explored with a partner in response to a contemplation that is offered. The dyad practice is optional so that anyone who chooses to remain in silent practice may do so, rather than shifting into dyad practice. One can investigate the guidance of the contemplation internally, noticing the moment by moment unfolding of internal experience. Also note that the ID practice goes from 6:30 to 8:30 PM to allow for more spaciousness and time for questions. We hope you will be able to join us.
