Gateway, Partners Hold River Grove Ground Breaking
Gateway Community Action Partnership, in collaboration with the Eastern Pacific Development and the Cumberland Empowerment Zone, will continue to transform the Southeast Gateway Neighborhood in Bridgeton with the development of the River Grove Family Apartments. Gateway and its partners held a ground breaking ceremony on July 24.
The 68-unit River Grove will provide safe and affordable housing for local residents and families. The project will include a River Grove Community Center. Planned are two single family homes, 19 duplexes and 28 three-bedroom apartments.
"We are going to change people's lives with the River Grove Family Apartments," said Albert B. Kelly, Gateway's President and CEO and the Mayor of Bridgeton. "I want to thank all involved for what you are doing to make Bridgeton a better community and a great community."
Attending were Sen. Stephen Sweeney, the New Jersey Senate President; Hans Lampart, the President and CEO of Eastern Pacific Development/Brookfield Construction; Michael Matthews, the Housing Programs Director at USDA; Joe Derella, Cumberland County Freeholder Director; Darlene Barber, Cumberland County Freeholder and Chair of the Cumberland Empowerment Zone; and Douglas Long, from Grace Marmero and Associates, who served as the master of ceremonies. Gateway staff, including Edward Bethea, Executive Vice President and COO, also attended. Board chairman John Washington and board member Joe L. Kidd attended.
"It is a thrill to be in the great city of Bridgeton," Sen. Sweeney said. "It is a great city with a lot of amazing people. It just needed a chance. You can see people here moving forward. I want to congratulate my friend Mayor Kelly. Bridgeton is on the move. The most important things you need safe neighborhoods, good schools and housing. And we are putting it all together."
USDA is providing approximately $553,000 in annual rental assistance, as well as a $3 million construction loan. Funding is also provided through Low Income Housing Tax Credits and the City of Bridgeton is providing for a Payment in Lieu of Taxes. Construction funding is being provided by Century Savings Bank and Equity from Regions Bank/JP Morgan.
Each River Grove unit includes amenities such as: range, refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, gas heat and electric central air conditioning. Well care and other programs will be available through a local service provider, and social activities and events for the residents are planned.

Gateway Program Providing Nutritious Meals To Youth During Summer

Gateway launched its summer feeding initiative in June at Bridgeton High School.

Gateway, in collaboration with its partners, launched its summer feeding initiative with a kickoff event in late June at Bridgeton High School.
Gateway President and CEO Albert B. Kelly, who is also the Mayor Bridgeton, and New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Doug Fisher were among those on hand to discuss the program and its impact.
The program is currently providing nutritious meals for youth -18 and younger - in the summertime when they do not have access to the food provided at school during the school year. Gateway, in partnership with the Bridgeton Public Schools, the NJ Department of Agriculture, the USDA, Inspira Health Network, the Community Food Bank of NJ, ShopRite and the Bridgeton PAL, is utilizing the Mobile Summer Feeding Bus, funded by the OceanFirst Foundation, to deliver meals. The food is being distributed by youth in Gateway's Next Generation of Leaders program.
"It's my pleasure to be the Mayor of this great city, but it is a team effort in making things happen in our community," Kelly said as he stood near the Mobile Summer Feeding Bus. All the people here work together to continue the trend of Bridgeton becoming an even greater city."
Said Fisher: "This is one of the best sites I have seen in the state in terms of the organizing effort and what is being served. Just everything in its place."
Also in attendance were Ed Geletka, representing OceanFirst Bank and the OceanFirst Foundation, Diana Limbacher, USDA Deputy Regional Administrator and Rose Tricario, from the NJ Department of Agriculture, and Dr. Thomasina Jones, Superintendent of Bridgeton Public Schools and Warren DeShields, Food Service Director, Bridgeton Public Schools.
"Programs like these are essential," Limbacher said. "We know there is a lot of food insecurity in the summer when the kids are not in school. You can only make these programs successful when we have champions such as Mayor Kelly. Mayor Kelly has done an excellent job. In fact, we use this program as a best practice in our nation and region, and we have asked Mayor Kelly to speak at some of our summits to talk about all the things he has done."
Said Jones: "We want our children to have access to food this summer. We realize that there are parents who are struggling to meet the financial needs of their family and because we are employed in a low-income school district, it is our responsibility to ensure that you have what you need to thrive and survive during the summer months."

Unity Day, an annual Southeast Gateway neighborhood tradition since the 1980s, returned through Gateway's direction and is in celebration of the revitalization efforts taking place in the transitioning of the Southeast Gateway neighborhood and the entire City of Bridgeton.  The event was free and open to the public.

Glory Tabernacle Summer Camp Students Help Out At Mill Creek Urban Farm

Glory Tabernacle Summer Camp students helped out at Gateway's Mill Creek Urban Farm in July. Thirty-one students, ages 8 to 11, did a great job assisting with the tasks that make the farm run so successfully. They all went home with a bag of donated cucumbers and hydroponic salad greens. This is the third year the Glory Tabernacle students visited the farm.  They are planning for a second visit this growing season on August 9 and we are hoping to incorporate a gleaning event.
Millville Family Success Center Holds Successful Community Baby Shower

The Holly City Family Success Center in Millville held a Community Baby Shower, hosted at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Holly City FSC helped a group of expectant mothers from the Millville area that were in need of a helping hand. The center connected with local businesses, vendors, and faith based organizations for support and we were amazed and pleased with how many of them dropped off donations of new items for this event. The Cumberland County Health Department donated food and water and were a big part of the celebration as well. The mothers that attended were excited and overwhelmed about the amount of love that was shown. More than 60 people attended.
Greater Bridgeton Family Success Center Has Fun With Character Story Time

The Greater Bridgeton Family Success Center held a Character Story Time event at the Mrs. Inez Childcare Center. The theme was "Under the Sea." Staff members Ivelise Perez and Lisa Carter were mermaids from an Under the Sea kingdom. We read two books that were interactive and had an activity for them to do related to the theme. At the end of the session we played music from the Little Mermaid movie. Our guests had a wonderful time and the staff at the Greater Bridgeton Family Success center enjoyed it as well. This is a free and fun-filled program that we hold once a month, every third Friday from 10 a.m. to 11a.m. Please call the center at 856-451-1133 for more information.
