Food security panel calls for more education, collaboration
Richard Lugar, former U.S. senator from Indiana, joined a panel of six Purdue University College of Agriculture faculty and staff members April 30 for a roundtable discussion on global food security.

Lugar -- who currently serves as president of The Lugar Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization focusing on global food security, WMD nonproliferation, aid effectiveness and bipartisan governance -- emphasized the important role of research and education in fighting global hunger.

Appalachian dairy farmers form new cooperative
In reaction to changing market conditions, a group of dairy farmers who previously marketed their milk independently have formed Appalachian Dairy Farmers Cooperative (ADFC) and expect to begin operations on June 1, 2018. The new organization has entered into an agreement with Piedmont Milk Sales LLC to market the milk produced by the cooperative's members and manage its day-to-day business under the direction of the cooperative's board of directors.

"This new structure became necessary because of the current imbalance between the milk supply and the demand for milk, which has driven milk prices received by dairy farmers to levels that are below the cost of production," ADFC board president Gary MacGibbon said. "Events over the past few months in the dairy industry have shown just how vulnerable dairy farmers are to changing market conditions. While formation of this new cooperative will not improve prices received by dairy farmers for their milk, it will help members of ADFC retain markets for their milk."

New USDA food safety undersecretary names
President Donald Trump named Dr. Mindy Brashears to be the U.S. Department of Agriculture's undersecretary for food safety. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue applauded the nomination.

"Food safety is at the core of USDA's mission, because it directly affects the health and well-being of millions of Americans every day. President Trump has made an excellent choice in Dr. Mindy Brashears, and I am excited to have her join the team," Perdue said. "Dr. Brashears has spent decades finding ways to improve food safety standards through innovation, invention and leadership on research missions across the globe. I look forward to her bringing that wealth of expertise and track record of results here to USDA."

Biotech food labeling rule unveiled by USDA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has rolled out one of the final steps in establishing a new food labeling law. On Thursday, the agency published a proposed final rule to establish the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (NBFDS) mandated by Congress in 2016.

The standard will provide a uniform way to offer meaningful disclosure for consumers who want more information about their food and to avoid a patchwork system of state or private labels that could be confusing for consumers and would likely drive up food costs.
