Tamar Nazerian Chorbadjian, DO, MPH, FAAP

In October I had the privilege to attend the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition (NCE) of 2016 in San Francisco, California.  This year's NCE was important as I was in the running for one of two Executive Council positions for the Section on Pediatric Trainees.  The competition was very tough with many well-qualified candidates.

In this article, Dr. Chorbadjian, a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellow, provides an overview of her experience at NCE in San Francisco, including an overview of a new advocacy campaign that focuses on  resilience to mitigate toxic stress. Read more...

Advocating Before the California Dental Board - Sacramento
Paula J. Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP
CFMC Representative, AAP-District IX
Immediate Past President, AAP-CA2

Not one more healthy California child should suffer a potentially preventable death in a dental chair, if anything can be done to prevent it... Not one more.

The Dental Board of California (DBC) met on October 13, 2016. On the agenda was a discussion of their Pediatric Anesthesia Study (PAS) in light of recent office-based dental anesthesia deaths and the passage of AB2235, otherwise known as "Caleb's Law."   This article covers the developments during my most recent trip to Sacramento, including t he preliminary recommendations of the DBC Subcommittee on Pediatric Dental Sedation, the DBC's disregard for our proposed moratorium on the single operator-anesthetist general anesthesia practice, and the late breaking update related to this article: A 4-year-old girl in Alberta, Canada, who recently suffered brain damage related to pediatric anesthesia in a dental office... and the immediate decision of the Alberta Dental Association and College. Representing AAP-CA, Paula Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP returns to her seat after speaking before the California Dental Board in Sacramento.

NCE 2016 - San Francisco

A total of 137 AAP-CA2 members attended the 2016 National Conference & Exhibition in San Francisco this past October.
From the San Francisco Experience! at The Exploratorium, to Dr. Richard Pan's visit at our District IX breakfast and Dr. Benard Dreyer's address during the Annual Business Luncheon, the conference was jam-packed with didactic sessions to suit everyone's needs.

Aside from the hundreds of lectures presented by 524 speakers, we were able to capture a few of our members in action.
And of course, we could not pass taking a snapshot of the impressing 1,800 names on the Pediatric Residency Class of 2015 banner.

Two Surveys - Please Help Us Reform Policies and Services.
Survey: Developmental Screening Practices

AAP chapters throughout California are teaming up with Silicon Valley Community Foundation's Center for Early Learning to learn more about your views and practices regarding early childhood development services. Please help by completing an online statewide survey* that includes questions about the developmental screening attitudes and practices of your office -the data collected will help in planning and developing comprehensive policies and services that support children and families in California to grow and thrive.

Click on this link to access the survey: Begin Survey

The deadline to complete the survey has been extended to  November 11, 2016.  In appreciation for completing the survey, you can enter a drawing to receive one of a range of prizes including $15 or $20 Starbucks gift cards or one of the 30 FREE Nexus 7 Tablets. If you have any questions about this survey, please feel free to contact Michelle Sioson Hyman at mshyman@siliconvalleycf.org.

*Only one survey should be submitted on behalf of your practice. Any staff member who is familiar with the developmental screening practices of the office may fill out the survey, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and medical support staff.  Please ensure that the person who completes the survey is sufficiently informed about office attitudes and practices to respond to every question.  All individual results will remain confidential; only aggregate results will be reported.

Survey: Autism - Physician Practice Patterns

A graduate student at Stanford University School of Medicine is partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2 to conduct a survey about practice patterns of physicians taking care of children and families with autism. The goal is to help us learn how to provide the best care we can.
