We are continuing our commitment of delivering meaningful projects and activities, offering CME and MOC whenever possible. Your attendance at these events, especially the various Town Halls, are a contribution to the practice of pediatrics, and to the professional development of all in attendance.

The AAP National presidential election continues through November 21
st
. In the same ballot, voting members have an opportunity to select a National Nominating Committee (NNC) Representative for District IX. Please remember to vote before the deadline. Information about the NNC candidates is included below.
The fourth and last in the series of Developmental Screening and Autism talks by Larry Yin, MD, MSPH, FAAP will be in City of Commerce on November 9th. Please register to take advantage of this fabulous program with dinner and CME credit. These events have been sponsored by AltaMed and CHLA, through a grant from First 5 LA.

Two California agencies need our input to restructure services for autism and developmental screening. This is a concrete way to make our voice count and recreate what is not working well. In October I had the privilege to attend the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition (NCE) of 2016 in San Francisco, California. This year's NCE was important as I was in the running for one of two Executive Council positions for the Section on Pediatric Trainees. The competition was very tough with many well-qualified candidates.

Advocating Before the California Dental Board - Sacramento

The Dental Board of California (DBC) met on October 13, 2016. On the agenda was a discussion of their Pediatric Anesthesia Study (PAS) in light of recent office-based dental anesthesia deaths and the passage of AB2235, otherwise known as "Caleb's Law."

National Nominating Committee Representatives - Two District IX Candidates

The AAP national Presidential election runs through November 21. During this election, voting AAP-CA2 members also have an opportunity to select the District IX National Nominating Committee Representative.
T
he NNC member represents his/her respective district at deliberations of the NNC, which is responsible for nominating two candidates for the office of President-elect prior to the Annual Leadership Forum each year. In this capacity (among many other responsibilities) the NNC member supervises the national election process by:
- Attending one Board of Directors meeting while in first year on the NNC.
- Serving as host for the President-elect candidates and introduce the candidates during the Annual District meeting.
- Reaching out to district members in effort to identify potential candidates for President-elect.

October 5th. in Woodland Hills
AAP-CA2 Member At Large, Ken Saul, MD, FAAP hosted a Town Hall at Maggiano's of Woodland Hills on October 15.
Guest speaker Oliver Brooks, MD, FAAP shared pearls on prevention of influenza and meningococcus infection. Dr. Brooks is Chair of Immunize LA Families Coalition, President of the California Immunization Coalition, Associate Medical Director and Chief of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine at Watts Healthcare Corporation, and Medical Director at Jordan and Locke High School Wellness Centers. Following the feature presentation, Dr. Saul engaged the audience as usual, begining with his Sports Trivia, and culminating with topics of interest and controversy. This event was generously s
ponsored by Sanofi.

October 13th. Town Hall with Speaker, Diane Tanaka, MD
The AAP-CA2 hosted a town hall in collaboration with Essential Health on October 13, 2016 at the Radisson Los Angeles Midtown at USC. Guiragos Minassian, MD, FAAP welcomed the participants on behalf of AAP-CA2, and Sarah Roush provided an introduction to Essential Access Health (formerly California Family Health Council). Facilitated by Diane Tanaka, MD from Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the Town Hall included a presentation and a discussion on integrating sexual and reproductive health into primary care. The training reviewed adolescent sexual behavior, STD epidemiology, and implementing sexual health into primary care visits with a focus on STDs. Attendees participated in an in-depth discussion regarding challenges and methods to reduce barriers presented during adolescent patient visits.

AAP-CA2 President, Edward Curry, MD, FAAP hosted the third talk of a series of four lectures by Larry Yin, MD, MSPH, FAAP on the topic of Developmental Screening and Early Detection of Autism for the General Pediatrician. This event took place on October 18th at Pomona Valley Mining Company, in Pomona, and was attended by pediatricians from Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.
Dr. Yin emphasized on the utilization of standardized developmental screening tools, and shared real patient videos depicting children with evident developmental delay and behaviors suggestive of Autism. Please look below under "Coming Events" if you are interested in attending this highly informative and educational event. The fourth and last session will take place on November 9th. at AltaMed Corporate Offices, in the City of Commerce. These talks are funded by AltaMed Health Service through First 5 LA.

1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

A total of 137 AAP-CA2 members attended the 2016 National Conference & Exhibition in San Francisco this past October.
From the San Francisco Experience! at The Exploratorium, to Dr. Richard Pan's visit at our District IX breakfast and Dr. Benard Dreyer's address during the Annual Business Luncheon, the conference was jam-packed with didactic sessions to suit everyone's needs.
Aside from the hundreds of lectures presented by 524 speakers, we were able to capture a few of our members in action.
And of course, we could not pass taking a snapshot of the impressing 1,800 names on the Pediatric Residency Class of 2015 banner.

AAP chapters throughout California are teaming up with Silicon Valley Community Foundation's Center for Early Learning to learn more about your views and practices regarding early childhood development services. Please help by completing an online statewide survey* that includes questions about the developmental screening attitudes and practices of your office -the data collected will help in planning and developing comprehensive policies and services that support children and families in California to grow and thrive.

All individual results will remain confidential; only aggregate results will be reported.

A graduate student at Stanford University School of Medicine is partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2 to conduct a survey about practice patterns of physicians taking care of children and families with autism. The goal is to help us learn how to provide the best care we can.

The National Institute of Health estimates almost 3 times more patients living with autoimmune conditions, as compared to
cancer patients (23.5 vs. 9 million). Focusing on annual direct health care costs, autoimmune disorders are twice as much as cancer ($100 vs. $57 billion) costs.
