Jottings from Grace Street

To read a reflection on this Sunday's Gospel, visit    Jottings from Grace Street, a weekly blog by the Rev. Sue Eaves, our interim rector.

The excitement and joy of Easter Day is fading into the dailiness of living life in a post-Easter world. As frail human beings, we cannot live on a permanent high. Heaven seems too overwhelming to contemplate, so God is gently returning us to our journey on the road towards God.

Three Choirs Festival

Three Choirs Festival Choral Vespers for the Feast of the Ascension
Thursday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The 100 voices of the Richmond Three Choirs Festival join together in a service of Choral Vespers for the Feast of the Ascension, held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

The service is sung by the combined choirs of St. James's, St. Stephen's, and St. Paul's Episcopal churches. The Choirs will present repertoire by Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Croft, and Charles Villiers Stanford. Following the service, a reception will be held.
Choral Evensong: Feast of the Ascension

The fourth Choral Evensong of the season will be on Sunday, May 13 at 5:00 p.m. This service will be featuring a small, selected ensemble from the St. Paul's Choir, as they present a service celebrating the Feast of the Ascension. This service will be held in the Atrium, and will also feature the Henry Erben organ that currently resides in the chapel. During the renovation of the church, the organ will be removed from the chapel and placed in the Atrium.

Following the service there is a reception. All are welcome!
Renovation update

This week marked the beginning of the renovation work in the church. Our organ contractors began to remove the pipes from the Rosales organ for transport to safe storage to protect them from the dirt and dust our construction will create.

We have contracted with Katie Chernau to be our Owner's Representative/Project Manager.

Construction work is expected to begin in early next month.
Pentecost!
On May 20, we will be celebrating the birthday of the church with an all-parish picture, a picnic, and cake! Please bring some food to share (the church will provide chicken, potato salad, rolls and a cake) wear flame colored clothes and come ready to hear about our brothers and sisters in Mwitikira.  Pentecost Sunday will be the last Sunday in the chancel until       after the renovations are finished, so prepare to celebrate!
Communications transition

From an email announcement from the interim rector and wardens: "Gail Goldsmith's last day will be 5/11. She will be ordained in June, and will serve as curate at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn, AL. We wish her well on her new journey and pray her ministry be blessed with love and grace. However, the vestry, helped by the Communications Committee and Rich, is happy to announce that Sarah A. Foote will join St. Paul's as Director of Communications.

Sarah has been the volunteer and development coordinator at Community Lodgings in Alexandria, VA., a nonprofit organization founded by eight Episcopal churches that provides housing and educational services to impoverished families. Her responsibilities ranged from writing and editing to coordinating volunteer activities. She will telecommute starting May 14 and will be in the office starting May 21."

In order to ease the transition, we've put together a communications request form that can be found at stpaulsrva.org/news. Please use this to send in announcements! You can email Sarah at sfoote@stpaulsrva.org, starting May 12
St. Paul's Prayers

We pray for the Spirit of the Resurrection in Metropolitan Richmond: For all who seek God on behalf of others; for pastors, ministers, missionaries, intercessors and other servants of Christ.

We pray for all the baptized in their daily work, especially those of our congregation and community who work in providing emergency response services, including regular and volunteer fire and ambulance personnel, EMTs, and ER personnel.

We pray for Sonny Harris, Mike Cizenski, son-in-law of Lynn and Peter Blankman; Elizabeth Hess, mother of James Hess; James Hess, husband of Erin; Phil and Janet Schwarz, Lew Flinn, Kitty Belew, Earle Dunford, and Alton Ayer. For the deceased: Jo Ann O' Hara and Norma Fonville Green, mother of Missy Benson.

Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to your never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that you are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If you would like to add a name to the prayer list, please be in touch with Carter Johann at cjohann@stpaulsrva.org or (804) 643-3589.
