Learn, Connect, Grow...
We are so happy to give you some details about a special event you won't want to miss. Please reserve May 3 and 4 on your calendar to attend an engaging weekend of learning with our guest Scholar in Residence, Rabbi Sam Joseph, a highly regarded, internationally recognized educator, lecturer, facilitator and expert in Jewish leadership development.
Rabbi Joseph is the Eleanor Sinsheimer Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish Education and Leadership Development at Hebrew Union College. We are honored to have Rabbi Joseph visit us to share his expertise helping Jewish institutions work toward excellence in fulfilling their mission and vision. We know that our young and evolving congregation can learn a lot from Rabbi Joseph.
The Connections/Adult Education committee is organizing an energizing two days of activities. Here are a few tidbits of information to entice you...
On Friday evening, May 3, Rabbi Joseph and Rabbi Hershenson are leading a Shabbat service around the topic, Building a Congregational Identity: Wilderness Pop-up Tent or Solomon's Temple? An especially nice Oneg following the service provides an opportunity to continue our dialogue with Rabbi Joseph. This event is open to everyone in the Jewish community.
Saturday morning, May 4, Rabbi Joseph is meeting with the board, committee chairs, and members who are, or wish to become, leaders in the TBT community. The workshop presentation and discussion focuses on Cultivating Positivity in Our Leadership Culture and provides an opportunity to learn how we each can do a better job in our various responsibilities for our synagogue.
Saturday evening offers a wonderful Havdallah with an intriguing theme- The Jewish Affinity for Chinese Food: What Does It Say about Us?
We hope that you will attend at least one event during the weekend. Please mark your calendar and prepare for an interesting and interactive experience with Rabbi Joseph.

Divrei Tikvah

Thank you, Mother Nature, for sparkly winter snow in my rear view mirror and a wet, sloppy start to spring ahead. Just when we thought we squeaked by with a mild winter, a late falling 18+ inches blanketed the landscape and muted our activities for a solid four days. No school. Many offices and businesses closed. Roads thick with snow and side streets not plowed for days. No choice but to slow down, to stop, take a breath, and surrender to the present moment. Whatever it is will wait. I'm stuck here, now.
One, two weeks of colorless sky reflecting the whiteness of snow, everywhere. Being here, now, no longer feels pleasant, let alone delightfully naughty. Streets cleared, walled by snow like hamster trails. Back to the slog of responsibility.
And then, that day the sun shone against blue sky! Warm rays soothing shoulders and radiating through the smiles of souls revived. Rebirth. Recalibrate. The world is a beautiful place. Super Bloom, 2019. Wildflowers paint high deserts in the southwest with yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue hues. Glorious creation!
The rhythms of the season resonate in our experiences in life. Who has not felt a sense of dread followed by relief and just as ease emerges, bam, an abrupt challenge to that ease. Buckle down, do our best, we get through until suddenly we notice beauty, love, connection, joy in our midst. Recurrent hibernations and rebirths move us through the course of a calendar year.
Spring is a season of renewal. As colors sprout in the landscape and longer days provide more time to engage in relationship and activities that invigorate us, take time to notice. Notice what is. Notice what is not. Pay attention. Follow leads that manifest our better traits, our capacity to accept and wish one another well.
As spring emerges, we prepare for Passover celebrating our capacity for the experience of liberation, freedom. Our congregational Seder is always a wonderful context for reconnecting with each other and acknowledging what feeds our sense of personal power and comfort in life situations.
Shortly thereafter, we welcome my teacher and friend, Rabbi Sam Joseph from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute for Religion, for a scholar in residence shabbat the first weekend in May. Rabbi Joseph taught education for rabbis when I attended the college-institute. Twenty four years later, he has cultivated a mastery of how organizational systems work (or don't work), leadership development, and creating the organizations we want our synagogues to be. I imagine Rabbi Joseph's visit will generate the important conversations that will move our congregation forward into our tween years.
Already and in coming weeks, our leaders are reviewing programs and spending in the past fiscal year and budgeting for the next fiscal year. How do we spend our time together, as a congregation? How do we encourage each other to feel like we belong and to contribute to the form our activities and events take? How might I like to serve or love my community? What committee could I help lead? What might I like to share with my community? Is there an event or program I could help facilitate?

Passover's Coming!
The Butcher, the Baker, the Haroset Maker
The best part of any meal is dessert!! This is especially true when the desserts come from the kitchens of our fabulous bakers. For the most delicious of Passover desserts, we are again asking our members to please bake for us. Please contact Jan Freeman-Bauer

to let her know what you can bring. We need finger-food goodies, such as Passover macaroons, bars and cookies.

Passover Seder
For TBT's Members & Their Invited Guests
Join Temple Beth Tikvah for this year's Passover Seder. Come for
an inter-generational Seder with music and song, games for all ages, a taste of the Seder plate and a delicious buffet dinner.
Rabbi Hershenson will lead our annual Passover Community Seder. The event is open to members and their invited guests. Doors open at 5:00 pm, and the Seder begins promptly at 5:45 pm.
The meal includes all the tastes of Passover - hard-boiled eggs, haroset, matzo ball soup, horseradish and a very special treat of the Rabbi's homemade gefilte fish. Dinner buffet includes your choice of salmon, chicken, or a vegetarian entree.
The Seder is open to TBT members and their invited guests at a cost of $35 for adults, $15 for children 6 - 12, and no charge for children age 5 and under for those who RSVP by Sunday, April 7th.
Based on space limitations and the need to have reservations in on time, those RSVPs received April 8 through April 13th will be charged a premium of $40/adult and $20/child 6-12. No reservations will be accepted after April 13th.
Wine for the dinner table is available to purchase, or you are welcome to bring your own bottle for a $15 fee. Ceremonial wine will be served at the table.
Once again, we are having open seating, however, we will set aside a group of tables for families with children to be together. Also, if your family and guests number 6 or more, we will make sure that you are seated together.

New High Holy Day Prayer Book

What a Great Move to the Mishkan HaNefesh!
My husband and I are new members and we are incredibly excited to see that TBT is moving to the new Mishkan HaNefesh - the High Holy Day Machzor of the Reform Movement. Our previous Temple changed to the new Machzor a couple of years ago and our High Holy Day experience was improved and enhanced, dramatically!
The new Machzor is fully transliterated and mostly translated, allowing you to follow along and join in the prayers, but our favorite parts of the Machzor are the "blue" and "grey" pages. These pages contain other theological, and sometimes nontheistic, alternative translations, alternative prayers, poetry, essays from Nils Bohr to Maimonides and study texts. One can, and we've seen and experienced it, have a completely fulfilling High Holy Days following along with the Rabbi while spending most of your time on the blue and grey pages.
We go to High Holy Days for a variety of reasons - my husband's reasons and focus are often different than my own, yet for both of us the new Machzor enriches our experience; it even gave our perpetual-motion nephew something to do besides fidget!

Social Action Update

TBT is participating in two ongoing projects, Habitat For Humanity and Mt. Star Family Relief Nursery. Habitat provides a critical path to affordable housing for local Central Oregon families, and Mt. Star provides services for Central Oregon families who have kids zero to 5 years old who have high stressors, with the goal to eliminate abuse and neglect.
On April 12 we are volunteering to help with a build. PLEASE VOLUNTEER! Shifts are 9 to noon and 1 to 4. Many of our members who have volunteered in the past are out of town, so we need people! It provides a great sense of accomplishment, we work as a team under Habitat's expert guidance, requires no knowledge of construction and it's fun! Picture Steve and Char Dimond and David Uri with power tools! Join us on April 12.
Our Diaper Drive for Mt. Star is ongoing, and we need more donations. A lot more! Please consider whenever you come to an event, whether services or adult ed or anything for TBT, bringing a box of diapers sizes 3, 4 or 5. You can also call Lynne Connelley at 541 408 6720 to arrange a pick-up. Mt. Star serves about 300 babies and toddlers a year. Averaging 8 diaper changes per day, they can use a whopping 876,000 diapers and wipes for their families. The diapers they don't have to buy allows those funds to go to other critical programs including their nurseries. Please help by putting diapers on your shopping list occasionally and getting them to Lynne or TBT. Diapers are a critical health issue, both physical and mental. You can even order diapers online and have them shipped to Mt. Star Family Relief Nurseries at 2125 Daggett Road, Bend 97701. Thank you for your generosity and caring in the past. Let's keep it going.

Taizé Service
Next Taizé: Thursday, April 4
All TBT members are invited to Taizé - an evening of Interfaith prayerful meditation, peace, and silence. Taizé services are held the first Thursday of each month, October through May, 7:00 p.m. at St. Clare's Chapel, St. Francis Catholic Church, 2450 NE 27th St. in Bend, OR. Everyone is invited to attend and participate. Sponsored by the Sacred Art of Living Center and the Interfaith Community of Central Oregon.
