This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers.
Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

The survey results on the question of .....:

Does your business still excite you the way it did when you first started?
  • No way... worst idea I ever had... our trade has been brutalised & bastardised... should have taken up plumbing or become a sparky...
Once every sign business was sold a plotter, then a printer...Suppliers then started marketing to our clients...Councils, Government Depts., Universities...etc. Basically a major percentage of our clients...
Most expensive trade to get into now...
Much preferred a few tins of paint, & a handful of brushes, & no pulling your hair out with digital printers...
  • Even after 56 years in the business, I still get excited when I get into work every morning. I have no idea what kind of situations I will have to contend with, especially with humans and their human frailties. (Dennis, Signs Lines & Scrolls)
  • NO. I've been doing this for 20 years now and I can't wait to retire.
Rude, ungrateful, arrogant, asshole customers have ground me down to the point I'm no longer willing to tackle jobs that used to be a challenge and give me the satisfaction of a job well done.
Now its get the easy jobs done, get the money and watch the clock till I can go home and have a beer and be with my family.

  • I have been around the Signage industry for over 30 years in Australia, going from Claude Neon to Toohey's to Sign A Rama and now I'm with Kwik Kopy.
This is an ever changing business what with Sign Franchises shocking the "old time" sign guys out of their complacency and bad habits (a little like UBER shocked the Taxi Industry)
I love the nature of new technology and new players opening up new markets and the development of Wraps turning boring old delivery vans into Giant Colourful Mobile Billboards
Bring on the new "Soft Signage" development and Oh yes we are all in for the next "bumpy" ride. (I love Roller Coasters) (Brian, Kwik Kopy Australia)
  • Yes, even after 32 years in business. There will be exciting times ahead with new technology around every corner. 32 years has given me; a couple of properties, a shed full of my other passion (vintage motorcycles), a chance to mix it with other tradies with a passion for Letterheads & trade shows. There has been highs & lows, the only thing I'd do different is I would look seriously at buying an established business, as that would cut out a lot of teething problems & you are in the money at the start. It is a great trade to be in, it is up to you as to how much you achieve & learn, I am still learning after 42 years & hope to for a long time yet. (Bernie, Geroldton GraFX)
  • Probably more so. the best part is meeting customers in person, and interpreting their instructions into a graphic they really like. Major downside is the number of companies going into liquidation owing us money and many of them retaining another offshoot business or starting another one.
  • Of course, I wouldn't be in this trade if I didn't enjoy it. Every day is different, meets lots of lovely people and the money is quite good. I am a great believer in the old saying, "If you enjoy what you do, you are usually good at it"
