IOWA Basic Skills Testing

This coming week, students in grades 3 through 9 will be engaging the IOWA Basic Skills standardized test. Learning in the other grade levels, both above and below, are not directly affected.
Two days. Every year. Why would a school that doesn't believe in merely teaching to a test stop its program for two days to test?
  1. The test results provide parents a third-party assessment of basic skills in language arts and math.
  2. Students need practice and experience in engaging standardized tests. Older students take the PSAT, SAT, and ACT.
  3. The results do help Lake Pointe to assess its curriculum, as measured by this third-party scores.

In a report to the recent accreditation evaluators, Dr. Gail Stowe analyzed IOWA Basic Skills results over the past three years. Her summary concluded, "Proficiency was reached in all domains in grade levels 3 rd - 9 th for Lake Pointe Academy based on the IOWA Assessment - Spring 2018."
Obviously, Lake Pointe doesn't teach to a test. None of the standardized tests ask about ancient or medieval history, Bible or Christian topics, etc., nor do they measure demonstrated communication, debate, and composition skills, per se. Still, basic skills are basic skills and a very helpful means of assessment outside of the academy.

Go Mariners!

The Mariner golf team continues to play well. This season the golfers have been broadening their competition field and played local high school teams. Even coming from a smaller school, the golfers prove that they can compete evenly with these teams.

The girls soccer team ends the week with three victories!  Next Thursday will be the girls soccer team's last home game. During this time, the team will recognize the senior players. Come out and cheer on the Mariners.
