Galatea Fine Art will be showing New England Collective X from July 31 through September 1. This is Galatea's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition, featuring the work of over 80 artists selected from over 1,000 images. The exhibit was curated and juried by Katherine French, a seasoned professional of the art world. She has directed exhibition programs at Boston University, Montserrat College of Art and Danforth Art and is currently part-time gallery director at Catamount Arts. She enjoys doing freelance curatorial work as well, and has brought together the works of numerous artists for Galatea Fine Art. There will be an exhibit walk-through with Katherine French on Friday, August 2 at 4:00 p.m. preceding the opening reception, during which French will discuss the works selected for New England Collective X. Starting August 3, Cape Ann Museum is showing Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter's Journey, 1869–1880 through December 1. This exhibition features 50 original works by well-known artist Winslow Homer. Homer exhibited his first picture of the sea in 1869 as a New York illustrator and spent the next eleven years traveling widely across the Eastern seaboard. His favored locations, which he returned to often, were Gloucester and other parts of Cape Ann. On Cape Ann, Homer made his first watercolors and found his calling in marine painting. In Gloucester, in 1880, he began the most productive season of his life, painting more than 100 beautiful works. Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter's Journey, 1869–1880 celebrates the 150th anniversary Homer's first painting of the sea by placing his early works in their original, historical settings for the first time. His paintings capture the sea in all its forms, from wild, stormy rapids to slow, clear summer days at the beach. There will be many events in conjunction with Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter's Journey, 1869–1880, including talks, tours and sunset cruises, a list of which can be found here. Museum of the White Mountains at Plymouth State University is currently showing The Grand Hotels of the White Mountains through September 12. Curated by Bryant F. Tolles and Cynthia Robinson, this exhibit explores the history of New Hampshire's grand resort hotels, paying particular attention to the four that still exist out of the thirty that were in business when the industry was at its height. The exhibit uses paintings, photographs, artifacts, and first-hand accounts from those who stayed and worked in the hotels to create a picture of a different time. These hotels were the height of luxury, housing up to 200 people with elegant rooms and included recreation. The Grand Hotels of the White Mountains puts the viewer back in the turn of the 20th century, revealing a proud, beautiful history.
