Hypothalamus Pathway Drives Defense Behaviors
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Scientists have identified a previously unknown pathway connecting the hypothalamus and midbrain that drives defensive behaviors, according to research in mice published in eNeuro. Further research on this pathway could increase understanding of anxiety disorders.

The paraventricular hypothalamus has been shown to play a role in maintaining body states, but it was not known if it directly caused defensive behaviors. To investigate this, Qingchun Tong and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston developed a mouse model with hypothalamus neurons that could be stimulated

Drawing with Alternative Materials - Therapy Activity of the Week
Special Thanks to Pamela Ullmann and her Full Spectrum Blog for this week's Therapy Activity of the Week.

Some children on the spectrum seek sensory input when I work with them in art therapy. One client that I work with can not use tradition drawing materials for any focused amount of time. I have found that there are other ways to "draw" images that keep him engaged better.

EI Corner: A Therapist's Mantras for Early Intervention
by Kim Rowe, MA, CCC-SLP

As early interventionists we know all about providing family-centered services. We know that having a child's family involved and contributing to his treatment plan makes for better outcomes. We know that real changes in the environment, however minor, are real to that child's trajectory of development and that these are the years to make those changes. We know that we are the ones in the trenches with hands out in comfort as families grieve and hands raised in cheer as they celebrate. Speech-Language Pathology Corner: Four Steps of Communication
Source:  Social Thinking

By: Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP

Special Ed Corner: 41 Terms Every Teacher Should Know
by Judy Willis M.D., M.Ed., Radteach

In regards to the disconnect, we'll continue to strive to create content that is both expert and accessible, as The Simple Things I Do To Promote Brain-Based Learning In My Classroom

PTC: What Teachers Must Consider When Moving to Flexible Seating
[Source:  Mind Shift]

Flexible seating in classrooms has become popular over the past few years as educators try to make school feel like a welcoming place with different kinds of spaces for different types of learning. Frustrated with static rows of clunky desks, some teachers have taken to rearranging their rooms, bringing in furniture from home, and generally trying to shake up the way classrooms feel by paying attention to lighting, color and clutter. Educators who have followed this path insist there are some serious considerations to keep in mind.
