DBT Skills with Multi-Problem Adolescents
Skills Updates, Teaching Strategies, and Engaging Teens and Caregivers
June 7-8, 2018
8:00am-4:30pm
20 York Street, New Haven, CT Co-hosted by Yale New Haven Hospital
One of the most important developments in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) over the past decade is the adaptation of DBT for adolescents with multiple problems who are at high risk for suicidal and self-injurious behavior. DBT for adolescents was developed by Drs. Alec Miller, Jill Rathus, and Marsha Linehan to address the complex and unique challenges that arise during treatment with these adolescents and their families. In this training, you will learn about DBT skills training with teens and their families. The trainers will provide an overview of the adaptations made to standard DBT to address the needs of adolescents and their families, including a particular focus on multi-family skills training classes and the latest DBT skills for adolescents and their caregivers. Strategies for bringing DBT principles to skills training, engaging teens and caregivers, and group management will be provided. Ample demonstrations, experiential exercises, and role plays will help illustrate workshop content. This training will be of most benefit to those who have comprehensive training in standard DBT.

Social Media
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY: FROM A SOCIAL WORK PERSPECTIVE
June 22, 2018 9am - 4pm
The Children's Law Center of Connecticut
,
30 Arbor Street - 2nd Floor
,
Hartford, CT 06106
This course will examine the impact social media, music, and advertising have on today's society. Overexposure to certain media outlets can influence how people develop their value system and how they make decisions on moral issues and peer relationships. We know this to be particularly true with individuals who have experienced trauma and significant losses. By examining music, videos, and advertisement campaigns, we will identify the negative impact of imagery and subliminal messages and discuss ways to help individuals identify why they make the choices they make online. We will explore how to increase media literacy by educating and empowering individuals to use critical thinking skills and to see the direct and unintended consequences associated with technology. The importance of legislative advocacy will also be discussed.

Mad in America: Why We Need to Create a New Paradigm of Care
June 15, 2018 9 am to 1 pm Four Points by Sheraton, 275 Research Parkway, Meriden
"In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association adopted a "disease model" for diagnosing and treating mental disorders when it published the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. We soon learned that major disorders were diseases of the brain, characterized by chemical imbalances, and that psychiatric drugs fixed those imbalances, like insulin for diabetes. However, while that was a story that benefits psychiatry's guild interests and the interests of pharmaceutical companies, it was belied by psychiatry's own research. The biological causes of major mental disorders remain unknown, and there is a growing body of evidence that psychiatric drugs, on the whole, worsen long term outcomes. The challenge for our society today is to organize psychiatric services around a new narrative, one that is truly science-based, rather than the commercially-driven narrative that drives care today. " Presented by Robert Whitaker, author of five books, three of which tell of the history of psychiatry. Approved by NASW/CT for 4 CECs Co-sponsored by NASW/CT and the NASW Clinical Social Worker Network Member Cost is $70 Non-member cost is $95 Register at
