What You Need to Know About...Police Information Check Changes

The RCMP will transition civil criminal record checks away from name-based checks, to mandatory electronic fingerprint-based checks. Although originally planned for 2015, we have heard that the implementation timeline has been put on hold (with the exception of federal level employees).

CCVO has developed an In Brief for you to share throughout your organization and with your board members. It provides a summary of the planned changes around fingerprinting requirements and processes for Police Information Checks, including vulnerable sector checks, and considers the unintended consequences of these changes as they relate to volunteer recruitment, monetary costs, efficiency and privacy.

Read the In Brief to see how the PIC changes will affect your organization and how you can share your concerns and recommendations.

Constructive Engagement
Presented by Innoweave and CCVO

November 14 9:00 - 11:30 am
$150 per team of 3-4
Apply online - Deadline October 14

Join Sean Moore (Founder of Advocacy School) and Innoweave for a full-day workshop that will help your organization get your issue or message in front of the right audience.

Your leadership team of 3-4 (including board members) will start the process of developing an engagement strategy plan, allowing you to clarify what outcomes you want to generate, identify policy and practice barriers, and understand who needs to be engaged to achieve the intended impact.

Sean will identify the assets you need for success, provide examples of approaches, strategies and tactics, and clarify key questions that must be answered to finalize your plan.

Responses Rolling In
We have received new responses to our seven questions on the nonprofit sector from Rachel Notley, one of three candidates for the leadership of Alberta's New Democratic Party (Election on October 18th) and Greg Clark, leader of the Alberta Party and candidate in the October 27th byelection in Calgary-Elbow.

We Stretched!

CCVO has supported Imagine Canada's Stretch Tax Credit for Charitable Giving campaign by sending letters to Calgary area MPs, asking them to support The Stretch in the 2015 Federal Budget. The Stretch Tax Credit incentivizes Canadians to give more over time by increasing the charitable tax credit for donations exceeding their previous highest level of giving.

Population Projections
The number of Canadians could potentially reach 63.5 million people by 2063 according to new projections from Statistics Canada. Alberta's population growth, which is currently at +2.8%,  is expected to be the highest in the country over the next 25 years. More fun statistics on age and population estimates can be found here.

Political Activity Debate
The National Post article by Andrew Coyne aroused debate around chartable tax credits and political activity. Last week  Robert Roach added his thoughts to the discussion by suggesting instead of getting rid of the tax credits, we should remove political activity restrictions (except for limits around outright partisanship).

How many board members does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: It really depends on the composition and skillset of the particular board. If there is an electrician on the board, for example, then it may only require one board member. However, if there's a founder on the board, he might insist that the old bulb is perfectly good and there is no need to change it, so another board member may be required to create a diversion.
