When we talk about pictorial maps we are generally referring to the maps produced in the pictorial heyday from the 1920s-1960s, often colorful, sometimes cartoonish, and usually fun! But what about their precursors- those maps that combined illustrative vignettes with informational maps? Well, we would like to highlight a few map publishers and their delightfully illustrated maps.

Our photos simply can't do justice to these lovingly created reproductions, made in Italy at a multi-generational small business. They are printed in the traditional intaglio style and hand colored, making each one unique. Some are printed on antique ledger paper from the 1700s, some printed in sections and mounted on linen (these could be hung without a frame), while others have been painted with special paints that sparkle or shine. Any of these would be a truly special gift!

Where do miniature maps come from? From miniature atlases of course! Pocket-sized atlases were useful for many reasons, including lower cost of production (and therefore more affordable), travel friendly, good for school books, and also quite cute! Some of the first larger production pocket atlases were published in the late 1700s. We have a great variety of small maps to choose from, varying from the 1830s to 1890s, each with their own charm. Click the links below to explore all of them!

If you are looking for a big gift that makes a big impact, look no further! These handsome charts are impressive and interesting, especially with inset maps or plotting. Do you need a magnificent background for your zoom calls? We might have just the thing! And they aren't all expensive. The South America chart above is only $350 due to its condition, and our restrike charts are even less expensive. We have a huge collection of charts that we are working to inventory, so there will be more online soon. If you are looking for something in particular, let us know.

A Note from Bob:
Bob

Last month I told the story of a kind and surprising gift. Another map-related gift was given me spontaneously by the owner of a great French restaurant, the Metro Bistrot in Southbridge, Massachusetts.  His friend had translated Arabia Felix (Thorkild Hansen- 1962) into English (translated by James and Kathleen McFarlane- 2017) from its original Danish.  Although it took me nearly a year to pick up the book, it was an odd and fun surprise.  Arabia Felix is a detailed account of a mid-18th Century Danish research exploration of the Middle East in search of uncorrupted evidence of details in the Bible.  From conception to return to Denmark, the 16 year project was the first to map Northern Egypt, the Sinai, Yemen, Ninevah, and other historically important sites.  It is a saga of egos, politics, finance fiascos, Western arrogance, hard work, and danger.  This adventure is a worthy movie subject.  And, the irony was that this expedition and its products remained largely unknown until the recent rediscovery of diaries and contemporary accounts. This is a rewarding read.  A study of what must have been involved in many explorations of distant places led by driven scientists expanding our knowledge of the earth.

Happy Holidays!
We hope 2021 will bring peace and happiness to you and your families!
