William Allen White Day events

Students, faculty, staff and alumni: Please make plans to attend a full slate of events April 24-27 to commemorate the 150th birth year of William Allen White. Read the news release.

April 24
  • Pete Souza, White House photographer for Presidents Obama and Reagan, will give a lecture and presentation at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center. Free and open to the public. Souza also will be available from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Resource Center for a meet and greet with students.

  • Hot dog lunch for J-School students, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests. 11:30 a.m., Clarkson Gallery, Stauffer-Flint Hall.
  • William Allen White Day program, "The Future of Journalism" panel discussion with previous National Citation award winners and J-School students. 3:30 p.m., Ballroom, Kansas Union. Free and open to the public.
April 27
  • Scholarships and Awards presentation, luncheon and Burton W. Marvin News Enterprise Awards. Noon, Ballroom, Kansas Union. (RSVP required)
Note: The University Theatre is offering a special discount to the April 27 showing of  "Spring Awakening"  for anyone attending the WAW150 events. Faculty and staff
Strategic Communication Chair Kerry Benson and Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski attended the Journalism Education Association conference last week in San Francisco. They presented to more than 80 high school students interested in strategic communication as an emphasis in college. Benson also led two sessions on literary newsmagazine critique for high school editors and designers.

Associate Professor Jerry Crawford has been elected to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Professional Freedom and Responsibility Committee. Crawford's three-year term officially starts on Oct. 1, 2018.    
Research and presentations
The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. today. Get the details.
Strategic Campaigns presentations

Angie Hendershot's students will present their campaigns to Lawrence Transit and KU on Wheels at 4 p.m. May 2 in the Jayhawk Room at the Kansas Union.

David Johnston's students will present their campaigns to Populous, a global sports architecture firm, at 5:30 p.m. May 2 at the client's headquarters, 4800 Main St., Suite 300, Kansas City, Missouri.

Lisa Loewen's students will present their campaigns to The Topeka Zoo at 6 p.m. May 2 at the Gary Clarke Education Center at the Topeka Zoo, 635 SW Zoo Parkway, Topeka, Kansas.

David Guth's students will present their campaigns to the Truman Library Institute on Thursday, May 3, at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri. The public is invited. Guests should park in the visitor parking lot and enter through the East Entrance. The presentation will be in the Whistle Stop Room.

Multicultural Scholars Program

Associate Professor Jerry Crawford  and the students from the J-School's Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) celebrated the end of the school year and the graduation of Garrett Farlow. The students all had great achievements this year, including Farlow being a Fulbright Fellowship to Russia semifinalist, U.S. Department of State; Jose Pedro Montoya's internship with Catholic News Service in Washington, D.C.; Peter Fusilero's Midwest Exchange Program; Mona Rasida Ahmed's work with the Contemporary Women's Leadership Program at Wellesley; and Margarita Nunez Arroyo's KU's Undergraduate Research Award and her acceptance into the Ph.D. program at KU's Department of English. Each of the nine students has multiple scholarships for their academic success. To learn more about MSP, contact Crawford.

The University Daily Kansan is now accepting applications for its Fall 2018 staff.  Motivated and creative individuals are needed to produce and edit content for Kansan.com and the twice-weekly print edition. A background in journalism is not necessarily required but is preferred for some positions. Interested applicants should email a cover letter, resume and relevant work samples to Apply@kansan.com on or before April 26 at 11:59 p.m. See job positions and more information here.

Scholarships and contests
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters will award up to $2,000 in individual scholarships to next semester's juniors and seniors. Application deadline is May 1. Get the details.

Bonnie Rose Nelson, 1950 J-School graduate, died May 17, 2017, in Hudson, Florida, at the age of 89. Read her obituary.
