Innovation That Makes Our Community Thrive

Calgary's nonprofit sector is helping build resilient and thriving communities - in part through the innovative work of so many great organizations. This year the Calgary Nonprofit Innovation Awards recognized three organizations that are thinking and working in new ways. They are improving the lives of children, the vulnerable and the marginalized. They are making a difference in families, community agencies, landfills, green spaces and back alleys across the city.

Congratulations to Leftovers, Calgary Reads, and Calgary Can for making our community thrive!

Government and Policy
Alberta Throne Speech Recap
The March 8th Throne Speech outlined government's spring agenda which will focus on investment in children in low-income families, job training and job creation and economic diversification. Items of particular interest to the nonprofit and charitable sector include:
  • proposed legislation to end predatory lending.
  • a bill to implement Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan.
  • the Child Benefit Plan to benefit children in low-income families.
  • introduction of draft legislation modernizing the Municipal Government Act.
  • expanded access to workforce and skills training and retraining for the unemployed.
PIPA Update
The privacy commissioner has recommended bringing all nonprofits under the Personal Information Protection Act. This position, and much of the rationale, is consistent with what CCVO also put forward in our recent submission.
Alberta's Status of Women Ministry Launches Mandate
The mandate for Alberta's Status of Women Ministry has laid out a long-term plan to improve gender equality. The Ministry will focus on:
  • Increasing women's economic security
  • Increasing women's leadership and democratic participation
  • Decreasing violence against women and girls
Alberta has Canada's only stand-alone ministry for the Status of Women.
Recycling at Work
Coming November 1, 2016, all businesses and organizations, including nonprofits, will be required to recycle just like you do at home. With businesses and organizations contributing over 1/3 of all the waste going to City landfills, giving Calgarians an opportunity to do the right thing and recycle at home, work or play will make a big difference. Find out how to prepare for the upcoming changes.

Resource Library
What do you get when nonprofit newbies share their thoughts with veterans, and vice versa? Well, you get two groups who want to help each other and the sector succeed. And it turns out that what they have to say can be of value to us all, as shared in this Charity Village blog post written by Susan Fish.
This guidebook from Ontario Nonprofit Network will assist charities and nonprofits to integrate emerging and innovative community projects into their operational framework. A shared platform is an efficient sharing of capacity and nurturing of emerging leadership, and it allows innovative projects to achieve extraordinary impacts in communities across Canada.
While emergencies and disasters affect everyone, their impact on people with disabilities/special needs is often compounded. This guide from Calgary Emergency Management Agency provides emergency preparedness information for people with disabilities or special needs and for first responders who might be assisting a person with disabilities or special needs during an emergency or disaster.
Looking to update your skills in computer and digital applications, grant writing, project management or leadership? Perhaps you're looking to explore your creative talents, or learn more about personal wellness. Calgary Public Library cardholders can take two free classes per calendar year on these and other topics.
