Behind Closed Doors
By Bill Cotton    revcottonhill@hotmail.com

When it was evening on the first day, the Disciples were hiding out behind closed doors. There were rumors everywhere and there was great danger to the close followers of Jesus. The doors were locked and Jesus came and stood among them.

Thomas, who was not there, will hear about it later and say, “You have got to be kidding!” (loose translation). But Jesus stands among them in the risen power, and bids them to receive the Holy Spirit.

How do we preach that text? Are you glad that the lexionary has moved on to Acts? Jesus comes and stands among them—does he walk through the walls? After all, they probably used two by fours to secure that door.

Do we know about the danger of closed doors? What would cause us the Church, the body of Christ, to hide out behind closed doors these days? The frightened Iowa lawmakers and our new Governor voted to disallow Iowa cities from becoming “Sanctuary Cities” last week. Do those DREAMER kids and their parents have the lawmakers on the run? What are the lawmakers afraid of, sitting there behind closed doors in the State Capitol?

One thing for sure, the Risen Christ will not be there. Last time I looked, the risen Christ was with the victims—perhaps with parents and DREAMER KIDS. Laws to disallow sanctuaries will never work in a democracy. The churches in my city have sanctuaries and in many places the welcome mat is out. “Sanctuary” is a very old word that had its beginnings in the freedom and safety that the risen Christ gives.

Recently to lift our spirits a bit, we went to the Willie Nelson concert. Willie is a Methodist. Early in his career, he sang and directed his church choir in Texas. But they soon kicked him out, because they discovered that he also sang at a local tavern on Saturdays. Later, one of our Methodist seminary presidents recruited Willie to become a trustee for one of our schools, and he has continued to bless rural America ever since with his Farm Aid Shows. Jan and I love old Willie.

We arrived early and joined thousands from all over the state and beyond. The crowd was a mix of elders, 65-ish boomers, and their children/grandchildren, the millennial kids. And for this old guy, it felt a lot like church. We sang such theological giants as “Will the Circle Go Unbroken” and of course that great eschatological hymn “I’ll Fly Away.” And Willie introduced a new song,  “I woke up this morning and I’m still not dead.”  My prayer for this old church of ours is that we too  will wake up one morning and discover that we are not dead.

Indeed, Christ has risen! Now let’s tear down those locked doors and experience the new life that Christ can bring. “Fear not!” ought to be the new cry if we truly believe that “Christ has risen indeed!”

Prayer:  Dear God, help us to know that closed doors invite doubt and fear. Come into our sanctuaries—cast out fears and enter in. Yes! Come quickly, Lord Jesus.  Amen

A puertas cerradas
22 abril, 2018 – Cuarto domingo de la Resurrección
Juan 20:19-24

Ven a nuestros santuarios – expulsa temores y entra. ¡Sí! Ven pronto, Señor Jesús. Amén.
