Message from the Dean | April 2019
Busily Progressing Forward

On March 7, Governor Tony Evers introduced his recommendations for the state's capital budget. We were thrilled that the school's expansion project was included in his proposal. His recommendations then went to the state building commission for recommendation.

Republicans have publicly expressed their concern over the general bonding level proposed in Governor Evers' capital budget and, as was anticipated, all four Republicans voted no on all projects in the budget after attempting to forward the budget without recommendation to the Joint Finance Committee (JFC). Because the commission is evenly split by party, this means that they did not recommend any projects to the JFC.

This does not mean that the state budget will not include capital projects. We expect that legislative Republicans will negotiate and decide on an acceptable bonding level and work on crafting a package of projects based on that number. We will continue to work with legislators from both parties as well as the Governor's office to ensure that our expansion project is included in the final 2019-21 state budget.

To that end, we continue our legislative tours, which in March  included members of the Joint Finance Committee. Co-chair John Nygren reported on his visit and the school's work in his newsletter, which you can find here. During the state building commission discussion, several members spoke up about the importance of the school to the state and the critical need to expand our facilities.

We remain optimistic and appreciate your ongoing support of this important campaign .

This past month we also had an opportunity to review the Linden Drive parking garage plans. The current project time frame is that construction will start in September 2019 and conclude in late 2020 for occupancy in early 2021. As you would expect, during construction we will lose over half of the parking stalls available to our employees and students, but we will ultimately gain approximately 200 parking stalls when the ramp is completed. If you haven't already, you will soon hear from UW Transportation Services about your options for selecting parking during the ramp's construction. Please carefully review these guidelines so that you will be assigned a parking stall ideally not too far from the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Last, but certainly not least, I'd like to encourage you to enroll in the NIH All of Us research program. UW-Madison is a key partner in this massive NIH research project occurring over the next five years that will collect health data from one million individuals and contribute to the future of precision medicine. Not only is UW Health providing expertise to support the data collection and research, but all of us also have the opportunity to become part of this historic research project by volunteering as study participants. Look for further information from the school regarding an opportunity to enroll in the program this spring at the SVM.

It's hard to believe that the Class of 2019 will graduate in approximately six weeks. I wish each member of the class good luck with the hope that you have a fulfilling and joyful career in this amazing profession.
UW Veterinary Care Updates from the Director

A few quick updates this month. Welcome to new employees Cassandra Harper, CVT, in anesthesia, and Samantha Wolff in the CCU/ER.  And congratulations to Kimberly Legler , who was recently promoted to Diagnostic Imaging supervisor and celebrated her 13th anniversary with UW Veterinary Care.

As we approach our Open House on April 7, here's a wonderful bit of feedback from a frequenter of these events and recent client of our Small Animal Internal Medicine Service:

" I visit UW for the open houses, but it's been several years that I've had a 'need' to visit VMTH. From the time Meadow and I walked through the doors, we were greeted with kindness, warmth and welcoming professionalism by ALL staff. ... Everyone deserves to be complimented (reception and pharmacy as well). UW VMTH provides excellent care; every person I interacted with exemplified the standard of care UW sets out to achieve. "

The spring issue of On Call has mailed and is now online, highlighting how clinical studies of novel cancer therapies in our canine oncology patients have yielded more effective, less toxic cancer treatments for both pets and people. We also pay tribute to Morrie Waud, one of the School of Veterinary Medicine's greatest supporters and friends and an honorary member of the class of 2015.
let your voice be beard

On April 10, the SVM will take part in the UW Day at the State Capitol, joined by alumni and friends, to ask elected officials for support of our building project in the 2019-21 capital budget. The day will begin with optional tours of the Veterinary Medicine facilities for participants to learn more about our work and our expansion. You can add your voice of support by sending an email to elected officials through our Animals Need Heroes Too website. (As a reminder, per campus policy, UW employees should not use state resources such as university time or email to advocate or lobby elected officials.)

A Well Wisconsin free health screening event, available to employees, retirees and spouses enrolled in the State of Wisconsin Group Health Insurance Program, will be held at the SVM on May 6 from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in rooms 2255 and 2259. Register in advance at wellwisconsin.staywell.com.
