Despite the Giants struggles at the plate, slick-fielding shortstop Brandon Crawford remains steady and is third on the team in hits (13), trailing only Joe Panik (17) and Buster Posey (15), for a .277 batting average. Oakland Athletics
Elvis Andrus (1) of the Texas Rangers smacked a single into center field in the fourth inning but was erased a batter later when Adrian Beltre hit into a double play. Oakland's first baseman Matt Olson is shown stretching for the trailing throw. The A's would send Texas down to defeat, 6-2, on April 4 and pitcher Sean Manaea picked up his first win of the young season.

I Like Curry
It's time to celebrate the NBA Playoffs and nail biters to come. The fans' focus will be on Stephen Curry health updates and the rest of the Warriors walking-wounded. What better way to keep your mind off the queasy feeling that the Dubs will be facing challenges that they may not be able to overcome in the weeks to come? I've had a tough time sleeping. My insomnia led me down the path of creating teams from the names of NBA players from yesterday, today and tomorrow. If you have spare time on your hands, why not create a few teams of your own?

San Jose Earthquakes & San Jose State University
|
Two of San Jose's biggest community pillars have joined together in a historic partnership. The
San Jose Earthquakes and
San Jose State University (SJSU) have agreed to a multi-year partnership, with SJSU being named the club's official higher education partner, the first of its kind in MLS. "The Earthquakes and San Jose State University are two of the most important institutions in this community," said Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee. "We're thrilled to form this historic partnership with an educational institution as respected as SJSU and believe both sides will benefit greatly from the new opportunities this relationship provides." The Quakes have an extensive history with SJSU, having played the team's home matches at Spartan Stadium from 1996-2005. During this time San Jose amassed an 80-41-28 regular season record, won the
MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003 and added a Supporters' Shield in 2005. The Earthquakes teams of the
North American Soccer League (1974-84) and the
Western Soccer Alliance (1985-88) also played their home matches at Spartan Stadium. "We are thrilled to enter into this partnership with the highly respected San Jose Earthquakes, a model franchise for Major League Soccer," said San José State University President Dr. Mary Papazian. Sonoma Raceway -- Shell Eco-marathon Americas
Shell Eco-marathon, currently held in Asia, the Americas and Europe, is made up of two key competitions: Shell Eco-marathon Mileage Challenge and Drivers' World Championship, where students from countries across their respective regions use innovative problem-solving skills to design and build their own cars. Looking at every aspect of design and technology, students compete to prove that their bright ideas will produce the most energy-efficient vehicle when tested on the track.
UC Berkeley's CalSMV team participated in the Shell Eco-marathon for over a decade, but hasn't fielded an entry for the past three years. The team has returned to competition with a brand-new vehicle, Lux, which is driven by a pure battery-electric drivetrain on a carbon fiber body capable of transporting two people.
"We all feel like electric is the future, and we're proud to be able to say we're building the future technology," said team lead Kaamran Syed, a fourth-year student at UC Berkeley. "What drew me to Shell Eco-marathon was the challenge."
The team will compete for the first time in the UrbanConcept category, which focuses on more "roadworthy" energy-efficient vehicles. CalSMV, which comprises five electrical engineering majors, five mechanical engineering majors and a media director, is nearing the end of the team's first year together.
"As an engineer, once you start something, it becomes your brainchild and the more invested you become in it; you become so attached to it," continued Syed. "As a team, we are really excited to come back with a really cool car now that it's local. We're so excited to take it out there and see the other cars."
In addition to UC Berkeley, other Northern California teams entered in the Shell Eco-marathon include EEV at Sac State with the Green Hornet entry in the UrbanConcept category, as well as the Cal Poly Supermileage team with the Donald Duck entry in the Prototype category. Both teams will use gasoline as their energy source.
In the Shell Eco-marathon, cars will drive a fixed number of laps around the .94-mile, five-turncircuit and must maintain a minimum speed. Organizers will then calculate their energy efficiency and name a winner in each class and for each energy source: internal combustion (gasoline, diesel and ethanol), hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric technologies.

Sports Prep Star -- Patrick Wicklander
Valley Christian-San Jose -- Baseball -- Senior
|
A University of Arkansas-signee and the cover athlete to SportStars' NorCal Baseball / Softball Preview this past March, Patrick Wicklander is doing more than just delivering on the hype. Wicklander is 5-1 with a 0.98 ERA and hurled a complete game (7-innings) no-hitter with 18 strikeouts on April 10. The gem came in a 7-0 win over Riordan-San Francisco which pushed the Warriors' record to 17-1-1. Valley Christian has spent the entire season to date at No. 1 in the SportStars NorCal Top 20 rankings. One day prior to Wicklander's no-no, the Warriors reached No. 1 in the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings. They were most recently at No. 8 in the MaxPreps.com Xcellent 25 national rankings. Wicklander has 66 strikeouts over his first 42.2 innings of work. Opposing batters are batting just .085 off of him. Photo credit: Samuel Stringer. Courtesy Sportstars Magazine. |
