New Law Allows Social Workers to Address Threat of Gun Violence
Earlier this week, Governor Murphy signed into law legislation that will require health care professionals, including social workers, to help keep firearms away from clients who may harm themselves or others. The legislation (
A1181) strengthens existing Duty to Warn or Protect law and requires clinicians to notify local police if a client makes a credible threat of violence, or is deemed to be a threat of violence, against themselves or others.
NASW-NJ will be issuing guidance on this law for clinicians in the near future.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Today is
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time for communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders. Elder abuse is widespread. Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Research suggests that as few as 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse come to the attention of authorities.
