What's Important to You??

Take the Social Work Survey

In order to gain a better understanding of the needs of social workers in our state and your experiences with our organization, we would like you to provide candid feedback to us. You do not need to be an NASW member to complete the survey--we want to hear from ALL social workers, regardless of affiliation.

Congratulations to all our winners in the 2018 Chapter elections! Nkechi Ugoji, NASW-NJ Membership Chair and former Vice President, has been elected as the Chapter's next President. First, she will serve one year as President-Elect, beginning July 1, 2018.

New Law Allows Social Workers to Address Threat of Gun Violence

Earlier this week, Governor Murphy signed into law legislation that will require health care professionals, including social workers, to help keep firearms away from clients who may harm themselves or others. The legislation ( A1181) strengthens existing Duty to Warn or Protect law and requires clinicians to notify local police if a client makes a credible threat of violence, or is deemed to be a threat of violence, against themselves or others.

NASW-NJ will be issuing guidance on this law for clinicians in the near future.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time for communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders. Elder abuse is widespread. Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Research suggests that as few as 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse come to the attention of authorities.

She encouraged questions and an open dialogue stating that one of her missions is to have honest conversations about sexual abuse because it is happening.

On 6/5 the Morris Unit hosted Lisa Barksy Firkser, Director of CASA ( Court Appointed Special Advocates) who shared about their efforts to advocate for abused and neglected children to make sure they don't get lost in an overburdened legal and social service system.
