SwimAbilities® Instructor Course
June 28-29, 2018 (Host: Town of Okotoks - Okotoks Recreation Centre)     Register (Enter Barcode # 56369)
SwimAbilities Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the SwimAbilities learn to swim program. The SwimAbilities Instructor Course prepares instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach candidates with special needs requiring additional support for skill development and safety routines.
Prerequisite(s):  Holds a current Swim or Lifesaving Instructor.

All current Trainers must attend a Trainer Mandatory Update Clinic by December 31, 2018. There is one remaining Trainer Mandatory Update Clinic scheduled for 2018 in November (Edmonton). Course information and links to registration are provided below. If you have already attended a Trainer Mandatory Update Clinic please disregard this reminder.
Trainer Course (formerly: Instructor Trainer)

Trainers are responsible for preparing candidates to assume leadership roles as Lifesaving Society Instructors, Examiners, and Coaches. Trainers are responsible to teach, evaluate, and certify candidates for Lifesaving Society Instructor, Examiner and Coach certifications in the topical streams in which they are appropriately qualified. They may be appointed as a Mentor.
Prerequisite(s):  Application, leadership experience, current Lifesaving Instructor.
Candidates must complete the Course/Clinic Application Form and forward to the Society's office for approval prior to registering for course.

National Drowning Prevention Week
Mark your calendars! National Drowning Prevention Week is July 15-21, 2018.
The Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention.
The Social Media Plan  contains daily themes and key messages targeted to address trends seen in Lifesaving Society drowning reports and the data from the Drowning Prevention Research Centre. The key messages can be used on social media to promote safe behaviors while in, on and around water. Please include the #NDPW2018 hashtag in the posts.

Royal Life Saving Society - United Kingdom - Seeking Volunteers
As the Royal Life Saving Society only has a small headquarters team based in the UK, they rely on volunteers to help co-ordinate and implement their objectives and currently have the following volunteer opportunities available:

Volunteer Webmaster
The RLSS relies on its website (www.rlsscommonwealth.org) to promote the Society and to communicate with its Members. We want to enhance its look, content and usability and seek to appoint a volunteer Webmaster to lead this development.
Duties and Responsibilities of a RLSS Webmaster:
  • Maintain functionality, appearance and accuracy of the RLSS website which uses the content management system, WordPress
  • Update the website in conjunction with the Headquarters team
  • Optimise website exposure by analysing search engine patterns to direct online placement of keywords or other content
  • Create and report on website use
  • Assist in creation and delivery of internal electronic communications
  • Assist in the development of strategies for the use of the website and social media
  • Assist in the development of appropriate policies and ensure compliance with them
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Expertise in WordPress
  • Expertise in HTML and CSS
  • Experience of use of a variety of social media platforms
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with web marketing best practices
  • Proficient in using computers with related knowledge of software programs and Internet
  • Ability in the development of strategies and policies
  • Possess excellent organisational skills
  • Strong command of written and verbal communication
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Good understanding of the Society's overall business and its objectives
  • Ability to perform in a cross-functional team
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and produce quality results on time with attention to detail.

Member of the Fundraising Working Group
The Fundraising Working Group works under the leadership of the Treasurer and the Executive Director to identify and raise funds for RLSS Projects and Events.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Grants Seeker:
  • Perform relevant research to identify available grant opportunities and evaluate the results
  • Research for effective and authentic funding opportunities having a lawful registration and proven track record
  • Create and store grant information in a suitable database or spreadsheet
  • Participate in grant writing
  • Keep the relevant staff informed about upcoming deadlines and deliverables, thereby ensuring smooth completion of work responsibilities
 Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Possess excellent organisational skills
  • Strong command over written and verbal communication
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Good understanding of the organization's overall business and its objectives
  • Ability to perform in a cross-functional team
