More than 125 residents, parents and others turned out for a District 10 Land Use meeting this week to hear from city staff and Twin Cities German Immersion School representatives about the school's expansion plans. Mission Orthodox Presbyterian Church opened its fellowship hall for the community meeting.

Patty Lammers, crime prevention coordinator for the Saint Paul Police, shares tips in natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, access control, and even hostile vegetation. The free presentation is part of the District 10 Sunday Series. It runs 1-2:30 p.m. at the Como Park Streetcar Station, which is at the northeast corner of Lexington and Horton.
Plan Now for the Citywide Drop-Off
The annual Citywide Drop-Off at the State Fairgrounds is much earlier than usual in 2018: It's not in October; instead, it's Saturday June 9 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The Drop-Off, organized by Saint Paul Public Works and District 10, is a great chance to get rid of the junk you can't throw in the trash -- and do it at reasonable prices. The best price: If you volunteer to staff the event, you can get rid of a load of your junk
for free.
If you are a senior: District 10 will attempt to pick up items in advance for senior citizens in the neighborhood. You pay for what you are disposing, but the pick-up itself is free.

Rain Barrel, Advice are a Bargain
District 10's Environment Committee and the Capitol Region Watershed District hold a Rain Barrel Workshop on Saturday May 19 from 1-3 p.m. at Twin Cities German Immersion School, 1031 Como Ave. Participants can get a rain barrel for the unheard of price of $29 (plus tax), and learn how to set it up so it works the way it's supposed to. (If you already have rain barrels at your home, you can show up and learn to use them correctly -- for free.) Space is limited, so register now.
Don't Take It for Granted
Saint Paul Regional Water Services celebrates National Drinking Water Week by offering a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into how water actually gets to your faucet. The utility is offering
free tours of its treatment plant this Thursday, May 10. Tours begin at 2 p.m.; the last one heads out at 6:30 p.m. The plant is at 1900 Rice St. Tours take about an hour; you should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk about half a mile, including stairs.
Rid Your House of Radon
A limited number of grants are available to low- and middle-income homeowners for

A Como Park Tree Trek wraps up this year's District 10 Sunday Series. Arborist Tim Morgan leads a walk to help us better identify and understand local tree species, their health, and the diseases and pests that affect them.

Join the Next Wave of Rain Gardens
Capitol Region Watershed District leads a hands-on workshop to identify locations for the next wave of boulevard rain gardens in District 10. These gardens are among the most cost-effective ways to collect and filter polluted street runoff before it reaches Como Lake. The best part: The selected locations will get rain gardens installed at no cost.

Flowers are barely peeking out from the dirt, but nominations are now open for the 2018
Blooming Saint Paul Awards. The awards honor publicly visible private gardens, trees, and art in the city. Last year, Como residents Debby Smith and
Quentin "Q" Nguyen won gold awards.

Police Plan a Neighborhood Party
Saint Paul Police have announced their full schedule of
Safe Summer Nights events -- including Thursday June 14 at North Dale Community Center.
The night includes free food and beverages; children's activities such as a jump house and face-painting; and opportunities to talk with police officers and meet members of the K-9, SWAT, and Mounted Patrol. The event runs 5-7 p.m.
The exhibit space at the Como Park Streetcar Station is now
open for the season every Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Stop in to learn a bit about the history of Como Park, pick up replacement organics recycling bags, or just share comments and suggestions with Ryan, who is the District 10 board member on staff that day. (This week, if you stop in between 1 and 2:30, you can see the free presentation "Crime Prevention Through Landscape Design.") The Streetcar Station is at the northeast corner of Lexington and Horton.

District 10 is one of Saint Paul's 17 citizen participation districts. The District 10 Como Community Council is a nonprofit organization, governed by a Board of Directors who are elected by members of the community. The Council's mission is to inform, educate, and connect the neighborhood to increase community pride and confidence.
