Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 04 16 18

P arents and Guardians,

Saturday night's Prom was attended by almost 600 students and was a beautiful evening at the Dallas World Aquarium.  We had a large number from beginning to end and I heard lots of comments from kids about how much fun they were having.  The addition of using breathalyzers for all students prior to entry went very smoothly, and was effective in helping our students make good choices on their way to the event.  If your student attended, I hope they had a great evening.

This Friday, April 20th, a group of students has organized an event to honor the 17 students who lost their lives in the Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14th of this year.  They also want to highlight the important topic of school safety.  They are calling the event "17 Minutes of Silence" and have scheduled it to take place in the Commons at 10 a.m.  This event is not school-sponsored, but any student wishing to participate will be allowed. Teachers will continue instruction in classes during the event, and the bell schedule will remain unchanged.,

Don't forget that this Wednesday, April 18th is an Early Release Day, and school will end at 1:00 p.m. for teacher professional development.  All students will have lunch at 12:15 pm and may leave school if they have transportation.  Buses will pick up for their afternoon routes at approximately 1:00 p.m.

There may be only 7 weeks of school left, but there are still lots of activities between now and graduation.  Please take a few minutes and review the information below.

Have a great week,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Lovejoy Parent Authors Book

Susan Hoemke, a Lovejoy parent, has authored a book titled, Healing Scarred Hearts which will be released on May 8th. Following is information shared by Susan:

"After we lost our son Hayden in 2014 to drug overdose and our family was impacted the 8 years as he struggled with addiction and personality disorder, I began to feel the need to educate other families about what all we learned. I have been working with Kathy Stone to build a better drug awareness program. In 2016, when the Opioid crisis made the news, I decided to write a book and in 2017 Brown Books Publishing accepted my manuscript and this began the process to bring our story to the frontline. Healing Scarred Hearts will be released May 8th with hopes to bring education and healing to the complicated issue of substance abuse, addiction and overdose. My book also shares the crisis of legal issues that many times are associated with kids and substance abuse."

Each scout will "crossover" a bridge and be welcomed into their next rank. Webelos 2 scouts will have a special ceremony called the Arrow of Light and will be received into their new Boy Scout Troop. This is a big accomplishment for the Scouts who have worked hard all year to achieve their new rank.

We appreciate the help of our High School friends who assist us in making this event a success.

Interested volunteers should either email Michelle at [email protected] or text Michelle at 214.801.3505 and she will respond with event details. The deadline to respond is April 13th.

Teacher Recognition

At their recent National Convention, the Journalism Education Association (JEA) recently named Rebecca Pollard as the Special Recognition Adviser. One of her former students states "As a journalism teacher, Mrs. Pollard dedicates herself to teaching the staff all the aspects of yearbook in order to prepare her students as much as possible for the real world. She helped me become a better leader than I ever thought possible, refine my time-management skills, learn how to manage stress, and (she) instilled in me a desire to never stop learning."
