DVAR TORAH

This has been quite the week at Hillel Academy. With Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzamut in our rear view mirror we spent this week celebrating Lag BaOmer with the other two Pittsburgh day schools, and the GHS going on an unforgettable retreat to Edinboro, PA. On reflecting on the goals of the retreat with Mrs. Levari, we spent time discussing how we can teach leadership to our GHS students. This conversation reminded me of an important lesson about leadership found in this week's Parsha. At the onset of Parashat Emor, we read about the laws that pertain to the  kohanim, the priests during the time of the Batei Hamikdash. At the end of the Parsha, we read about the festivals and how they were to be celebrated in Jerusalem. At first, it is unclear why these two sections are juxtaposed with one another. However, when one thinks about the festivals as they were celebrated in the Temple, it is clear that they are deeply tied to the service of the kohanim. The kohanim were an exalted people. They were able to serve Hashem in ways that no others were allowed, but when you read about the festivals, it does not seem that their lives were exalted ones. While the rest of the nation gathered, the kohanim worked. When the rest of the nation feasted, the kohanim worked. And when the rest of the nation sinned, the kohanim bore the burden of their repentance.

In the role of the kohane, we see the role of the Jewish leader. The role of the Jewish leader is to serve. If you are given a gift, you must use that gift to lead and to serve. At Hillel Academy we are creating the future leaders of the Jewish people. Hopefully our students will grow to lead like the kohanim and lead through service to the community and bringing others closer to Hashem.

Shabbat Shalom

What's In A Name?
The Very Elaborate Titles Of The British Royal Family

By Micki Myers

Because I'm English, I often get asked by students about the British royal family. Last week, I was inundated with queries about the new baby born into it, especially regarding names. The royals, by tradition, tend to have lots of names, and lots of official titles, some of which are used when they are in England, and others used when they are in other parts of the British Isles. (Prince Charles, for example, is refered to as the Baron of Renfrew in the Scottish press.) Titles are either hereditary or conferred, according to traditional predecent, by the Queen. How each one must be addressed according to protocol, both the first time you speak to them, and every time thereafter, and who must curtsey to whom, and how deeply, depends on who else is present, and is profoundly complicated.

The Queen:

Full title: Elizabeth II, by the Grace of G-d, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith

Prince Philip (the Queen's husband):

Full title: His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, Knight of the Garter, Knight of the Thistle, Order of Merit, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire, Companion of the Order of Australia, Companion of The Queen's Service Order, Privy Counsellor

Prince Charles (the Queen's oldest son):

Duchess Camilla (Prince Charles's wife):

Full title: Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall

Prince William (Prince Charles's oldest son):

Full title: His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter

Duchess Catherine (Prince William's wife):

Full title: Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge

Prince George (Prince William's oldest son):

Full name: George Alexander Louis
Full title: His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge

Princess Charlotte (Prince William's oldest daughter):

Full name: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana
Full title: Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

Prince Louis (Prince William's second son):

Full name: Louis Arthur Charles
Full title: His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge

Prince Harry (Prince Charles's second son):

Full name: Henry Charles Albert David

At Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, we educate young men and women with unlimited capacity who compete in a superior manner in all challenges undertaken. Our students are Torah observant models of exemplary character, who love G-d, the Jewish people, and the land of Israel. To say that our students possess a love of learning, confidence and the ability to think critically, merely highlights the value of a Hillel education. What we ultimately achieve each day, and have been achieving for 70 years, is the gift of instilling each student with the foundation for a life spent actively serving and leading the Jewish community and society.
