PTA Board Role Spotlight
Have you ever wondered what goes into our PTA leadership?
Over the next few weeks, the Nominating Committee will be featuring our Puesta PTA Board Roles, especially positions open for 2019-20.

This week: VP of Educational Enhancement.
Both of our Co-VPs of Educational Enhancement are in their 2nd year which means both positions are OPEN for 2019-2020. Our currrent Co-VPs of Educational Enhancement help facilitate many of the programs that benefit our students at Puesta del Sol such as our Amity interns, Art Appreciation, Science Fair, Passport Club, Garden Club, and our after school dance programs offered in Spanish.

Current co-VPs: Jen Meyer (JM ) and Kristen McSherry ( KS

What do you most like about your role?
JM: In my role as VP of Ed Enhancement, it was literally eye-opening to learn how many fun and engaging programs are supported by our PTA. In Education Enhancement we strive to expand and enhance our children's learning by offering both in-school and after-school programs. For example, Passport Club is a fun and challenging way for the kids to learn geography, which is not specifically covered in our school's curriculum. Another goal of several Ed Enhancement programs is to offer the students more Spanish-speaking opportunities like our After School Programs for music and dance. Plus, the SITA (Spanish Immersion through the Arts) program just finished a 2-day, all classroom project with Mexican artist Adriana Morales. It is planned to have the art the kids created incorporated into our new building.
KS: [I like] working with Jen, feeling a stronger sense of community than I had in previous years even as an active volunteer, having a voice on decisions and a pulse on what's going on at school, and getting to know and work with the Amity interns, which is such an amazing program the PTA provides.

How much time do you usually spend in the role per week/what skills are helpful for this role?
KS: It really depends. It is not overwhelming. I am going to be honest, Jen puts in more time than I do - she is tech savvy and very organized. It takes up less of my time [in my second year] than it did last year when everything was new. Communicating well with committee chairs, supporting them and being responsive to their needs is important.
JM: I have spent about 5-8 hours in this role per week, and primarily the work is done at home. There are occasional meetings with the Principal and a committee chair orientation held at school at the beginning of the year.

W hat is something you do that may not seem obvious to others?
JM: The primary job of the Educational Enhancement VPs is to facilitate & support the various programs. The VPs don't run them!
KS: I work a lot with the Amity program and have gotten to know all the interns. We are so fortunate to have the program at our school.

Anything else you'd like our community to know about the PTA Board?
JM: One thing I'd like to add about being on the PTA Board is that it's an opportunity to be involved in the decisions about how to best support our kids' school: what programs the PTA offers, how we maintain our strong Amity Intern program, how we partner with the school administration to support the kids and staff, etc.. If you'd like to help in the decision-making, come on over!

Thank you Jen and Kristen for being so generous with your time and answers. If you or someone you know would be a great fit for next year's 2019-20 PTA board, please e-mail nominations@puestadelsolpta.org. We'd love to hear from you!

Accepting Host Family Applications for 2019-2020
It's that time of year again!  We are looking for 18+ host families for our interns in the 2019-2020 school-year . As a host family you gain a new, unique friendship and learning experience by welcoming an intern from a Spanish speaking country into your home. Additionally, your child will benefit from extra practice and help with their Spanish language skills.

We are adding some flexibility to the hosting duration with the addition of a half-year option. This will allow us to make better family/intern matches as well as potentially improve the experience for both interns and families.   If you are interested, please refer to the  FAQ's  for more information, then complete the  Amity Intern Host Family Application  and send it to  amity@puestadelsolpta.org

All applications for the 2019-2020 academic year must be received by 4/26.
However, we will continue to collect applications until we achieve our goal and/or establish a wait-list.

Staff Spotlight:
Sra. Stephanie Giraldo

After chatting with moms in the office, it has come to my attention that we have a hidden gem of a 3rd Grade teacher near Sr. Mattson's pod!  Sra. Stephanie has been described as "the BEST", "She's really nice", "We love her", "She 'connects' with the students".  Only her 2nd year teaching and 2nd year at Puesta del Sol, she has captured the hearts of many students and parents alike.

Sra. Stephanie's family is from Colombia and she enjoyed her grandmother's visits when she was a child.  Now as an adult, she travels back to Colombia yearly.  According to her favorite's  list, she's a self reported "sweet tooth"; hint, hint.  She also loves to read and practice yoga. If you ever wander back to the distant "pods" keep an eye out for this wonderful teacher who may be hidden behind the students and give her a smile and a sweet "gracias!".

Volunteer Coordinator Needed
Help Wanted! Actually, help is wanted to organize our help wanted. The PTA can really use someone to help us track our volunteer needs for all the amazing programs we sponsor. Your role would be to notify our newsletter, Facebook, and website teams of current volunteer openings, to review various volunteer reports to locate volunteers, and to answer and redirect inquiries about volunteer positions from possible volunteers. Most of this position can be done from your phone/tablet/computer and can also be done in evenings and on weekends if you aren't available during the day. Please help us help our students!

Please email
volunteer@puestadelsolpta.org  if you are interested.
Dads: We need a new Top DOG for our WatchDOGS program!
The WatchDOGS program is looking for a dad/grandpa/
stepdad/ uncle/positive male to lead the WatchDOGS program at Puesta Del Sol. Male involvement in kids' lives leads to more positive outcomes on a number of measures. Help make this magic happen!

We get it... We're all super busy and have lots of things competing for our time. You could realistically manage this program in about 1-2 hours per month, and you will totally rock it if you go above and beyond that. If you're interested or want to know more about what is involved, please reach out to ask. The clock's ticking as we consider requesting budget for the program next year and the new leader can heavily influence that. If two guys want to co-chair this program, that's a possibility too and you can share the load.

Let's keep this awesome program strong for our kids! Step up today and find out more. Contact Puesta del Sol parent Tyler Parris with questions at watchdogs@puestadelsolpta.org or call 206-660-5738.
